I haven't had a sunset or a sunrise for skywatch for a while but wanted to use this image, this week and today seemed most appropriate. It's from my friends flat again Paliament Street, looking onto the harbour industry bulidings. The colours reminded me of an old saying and I wondered does anyone out there, remember this or have a different version?"Read sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in morning shepherds's warning."
Gary has just told me that he remembers it but he said "sailor" instead of "shepherd." He's from Fleetwood, a costal town in the North Of England and I'm from Birmingham, the second city in the UK. It explains why Gary would substitute the word sailor, but not why I would use the word shepherd, although many moons ago before the industrial revolution Birmingham was quite rural. Either way it's a prediction using the sky's palette of the upcoming weather.
So, do you recall this saying, or have you got a different one ?

I always heard sailor instead of shepherd. I guess it depends on where you live. We don't live anywhere close to an ocean.

I always heard sailor from my Dad and Grandpa.
"Louis" also knows it as 'sailor' rather than 'shepherd''; odd given that he first heard it in the flat, hot, dusty, dry Texas Panhandle where he grew up, hundreds of miles from any ocean!

I've always heard "sailor" and have never heard "shepherd" so I find that fascinating! My paternal grandfather was a boat builder...I'm sure that's why we grew up hearing: "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky at morning, sailor take warning." Beautiful sunset, either way!
I've always said shepherd and seeing I'm a Brummie born and bred we may have had the same teacher. Cracking pic again. Thanks.

We always went with sailor's delight. Dad loved to boat. As kids who wanted a break from the water, we'd hope for any color but red a lot of the time!

Sailors beware! I can see you have hit the Manx brick wall. It is sad but come overs can be treated this way. This ex Manx lass has emailed the courier about your blog and work. I hope it helps. Two words, Baboosh. First is...Smashing! Your photo is incredible! I have only seen a few blogs so far, but how can you top that sunset, those colors?
The other word is sailor. Has to be from someone who calls a place to cook a galley and a floor a deck. I have heard shepherd used now and then.

I have always heard that saying with the word "sailor" in place of shepherd. But both would work I think.

We used both versions - a sheep farming, coastal area! Mostly we used "Sailors".

Someone told me, and I'm not sure how true it is, that colours like this are enhanced by pollution. You said this sky is over an industrial site and where I work, by the side of the M5 motorway, we often have skies as gorgeous as this one. Of course that theory could be a load of old balls!

I'm in the sailor camp, but then my dad was in the Navy.
My long gone grandparents thought that evening sky like that meant war soon. The war never came, so their prediction wasn´t very accurate.
I always heard shepherd, never sailor...until I married my hubby whose Dad was a Captain in the Navy.
