What did I say I was going to treat you to this week? A series of images on and around the beach. 

What has the weather been like today horrendous. 

Rain all day long. So no this image was no taken today but earlier in the week. Typical isn't it. Remind me not to suggest

a beach photography shoot in January ever again. Of course the post is also late for me. You guessed it. Friday is pub night.

Babooshka had an appointment to keep with Mr Jack Daniels and his close personal friend coke cola.

If You had seen the crashing waves images on Ramsey Daily Photo then you will possibly recognise this

place. It's standing on the jetty again looking down onto the rocks. No two days are ever the same

in the week it was so clear with the lovely

lucid green tone. When it's like this and still you really can

see all the way to the seabed quite a way out. not often like this though as I'm hoping to show you

that is if it ever stops raining! If you are a bird spotter this is a good place to stand. Often find groups

of shorebirds of many varieties resting on the rocks. Even the elusive cormorant family of birds

can be seen here. Seldom but it has happened.

Still having blog issues, but some have been resolved. Remember now comments are open on this post

The facebook experiment continues. I'm finding it a really useful back up to the sight and it's a great place

to add some videos for you to see.

Hopefully we can have some better days and I can get onto the beach ad photograph whatever I find.

Surely I won't find anything as strange as the chair in the nature reserve on the beach, but this is

a mad town so you never know. What's the weirdest thing you've found on a beach?

THE SEAWEED ON RAMSEY BEACH

On a spacious beach no one can hear you scream

After a really crappy day yesterday and I mean crappy a gentle walk along the beach.  I was

going to show you some pretty Manx scenes  and Manx Views of the beach in long shot and wide angle but I was distracted by this alien invader on Ramsey beach.  It didn't move. I poked it with a big stick to make sure, it didn't make a squeak.  Just had to take a photo or twenty of it. Pretty Huh! Actually I think it is. He(Gary) who won't move his ass off the sofa so I can stretch out, really likes this one. It's an artist thing isn't it. I can see you all salivating now over this if you are feeling all artsy today. Yes it would make a fabulous black and white too dahlink!

This image has sewn the seed of an idea for a series of images which I should do of just the

beach and see what I can find. For Gail's Man, maybe the elusive white dog poo. Be interesting to see how much rubbish has discarded there for all you realists. For all you artsy ones I'll photograph the weird shingle and sandbanks and for all of you who just want a plain old view I'll do that too. Of course a skywatch one. Who wants beach images then . Show of hands, well comments if you do.  Babooshka's Beach you have it.

White Noise, or Zen again

Waiting for the Man maybe?

Why have you got two images. As a treat. One you have seen previously on you haven't. You have them because I have to use do the same Z- Zen. Why because someone(Ok Gary), took the Maxtor, with all my images, to the building he is working in and as left it there overnight. Still no laptop yet( soon though) so no images at all whatsover. Guess what I can't even get images off the net I have copyrighted them at watermarked them too well. So Zen it is. Not such a perfect day for me though. Back to Zen

Now, the interpretation of Zen is subjective. As it's the last one this round, I thought a little lateral thinking was required. For me I just wanted to illustrate what it meant to me incorporating all of the above, from my spiritual, religious, human standpoint etc and a time when I felt all or most of the above and usually for me it's through music. So please accept this offering in the spirit of the post, and in no way is it meant to belittle or denigrate any one'sbeliefs.

The Lou Reed concert At the Douglas Marina, Isle of man, was one of my all time Zen moments. A Perfect Day. For me this the perfect example of a group of very diverse people, putting, politics, race, religion aside and being caught up in the moment of pure musical euphoria. You can call it escapism, and maybe it is but for me live music, especially by one of the all time greats is a slice of heaven, or being at one with the world, point of fact my own slice of Zen.

I wasn't feeling very Zen at all today. No photos, my usual bread not in Shoprite (is anything), Tescos still hasn't delivered our food, the food shoprite hasn't got, which is why we have to order from Tesco's and some nutter is spamming blogs with his sex blog, that carries a virus. You boring idiot. Grow up!  Don't forget Ramsey Daily Photo is now a group on facebook, anyone can join, just introduce your self on the wall of fame. Click my facebook logo. I can really rant and rave there. I'll even upload some vids. You tube anyone.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

Merry Christmas everyone from Babooshka and Barker,  who designed the card

Early post just to say Merry Christmas to everyone who is celebrating and to those who aren't have a good day whatever you are doing. I'm sure like most people blogging is the last thing on our minds. Actually a glass of red that I'm drinking and mince pie are on mine. I'm raising a glass to you all as  I type.

This image is the card that Gary designed and printed. Like the Royal family, The Prime Minister, and the President we have an official card too that goes out to all.  The image for those of you not from the UK is Prime Minister Gordon Brown. I'll let your read the rest.  Good news today Gary will be doing another cartoon for the Daily Star again in Jan 4th, so watch out for that BBC Politics Show work now and then. For those of you that also don't know Gary's job at the BBC credit crunched last month, yes just before Christmas so anyone needing an illustrator see here. Did you know I am Gary's unofficial agent too.

Have a great time all. If anyone wants me to email them the card Gary said that's fine just this one time only. Let me know. As for the ones in the post, I hope you receive sometime. I.O.M post, terrible service.

MANX FAIRY MAGIC - RAMSEY SKYWATCH

Could it be Manx Fairy Magic?

Well I don't think it's the Isle Of Man Fairies weaving their Manxie Magic and painting the sky with ribbons of gorgeous colour. No I think it's just another wonderful sunset over The Poyll Dooey Nature Reserve. There again with a name as weird as Poyll Dooey you would expect faires elves and Mystical types to be living here. Might even be Ginnie the Witch another famous Manxie. Click on the red words to find out what I'm on waffling about.

CORMORANT TO GO! - CRITTERS

Cormorant, Ramsey Harbour

Very early followers of Ramsey Daily Photo know all about Babooshka and the family of cormorants that hang around Ramsey Harbour. These are my nemesis bird! I am constantly chasing them to shoot(I should add with a camera, not a gun!) and the results are shown here.
When I have the big camera and all the lenses, great weather conditions, they are no where to be seen. When I have the big camera, wrong lenses and poor weather conditions ie bad light of course they appear, flapping around showing off, diving for fish- a real bag of tricks and an abundance of photo opportunities. Typically I didn't have the telephoto lens, the light was oppressive and here he was messing around in Ramsey Harbour saying look at me Babooshka. Ok he was actually saying that, cormorants don't actually speak, not even Manx ones but you get my drift.


Cormorants are shore birds. I know last time I uploaded a cormorant I had lots of comments from inland dwellers and some of you from certain countries echoed they had never seen one too as they are not natural inhabitants. As the world's climate is changing and a lot of shorebirds are seeking refuge inland, while at the same stroke a lot of familiar garden birds are seeking alternative food arrangements along the beach. Have you noticed any changes with your wildlife?

RAMSEY HARBOUR ,COURTING SWANS, CRITTER SUNDAY

A couple of weeks ago I posted the black and white version of this image. Blue and purple light on the monochrome image are quite pronounced as a stream of white light. This is the image as shot. For the monochrome I simply used photoshop "desaturate" to strip the colours from the image. Again it's just been re sized for the blog. You will notice I shoot a lot over, near, by or onto water. It's because it's so reflective and can really enhance tones and hues. The colours are reflections from the harbour boatyard. Also shooting towards the sun helped to elongate the magenta light onto the gravel.

These two swans were again a fortuitous shot. I had been snapping away at one of the elusive cormorants. It just wasn't happening. Cormorants are shorebirds with dark feathers, almost black, but on closer inspection you see green, blue and purple when the light hits. Very poor light and basically the wrong lens for the distance meant time call it a day. I Always take the opportunity to take a few spontaneous shots on these days. I had noted the swans were about to pass near to the better light, the reflection, and as they are white knew they would make up for the cormorant. The magenta light onto the gravel I like purely as it's unbalanced for the shot. Again I could of cropped just for the swans, but personally I'm just a sucker for purple.


As some people really don't get my humour I have gone for a very straightforward post with a smattering of photography tips, without the patronising tone of you could never take this shot. On the contrary. It demonstrates that there are some days when you just can't get the shot you want, but if you improvise, know one will ever know. Well not unless you're me and you shoot and tell.

Thanks so much for all the lovely comments, questions, suggestions for posts, inquiries etc. To the majority out there who understand that I have fabulous sense of humour but none when it comes to litterbugs thanks for joining in the banter, answering trivial or important questions I pose, for joining in the word games. For the many awards, some I will be collecting soon, again thank you. I will pass them on wisely. For understanding that you may not always get my best high res, large file photography, (because I have to sell that) but you will always get something interesting, challenging or one of my soapbox rants about wildlife or litter pics. For understanding that I live in one of the smallest places of the Daily City Photos, so I have a minuscule amount to photograph compared to the luxury of a huge city. At least it makes you far more creative, and has opened my eyes up to my own town. I've made some amazing discoveries and I hope to make many more. Are you still in for the roller coaster ride?

ODD SHOTS MONDAY - ARE WE THERE YET?

Ramsey, is just plain weird. Last week my odd shot was a footprint from a series of footprints that guide you part way round the town. Well across the road from those footprints was this oddity. What do you make of this?

Sadly it's recently been taken down. I took the shot before it was removed, again just documenting the town for posterity. How odd is it though? If you come into town by bus, right across the road from the bus station was this enormous sign on a slopping tree, pointing straight into town. So no need to approach a local. Look up ( you really couldn't miss it) and follow the pointed finger, and then follow the footprints. How simple is that! Irony is, Ramsey is so small, you actually don't need this rather threatening giant hand with the finely manicured nails
(gender indiscriminate) pointing out the direction, the place is too small to get lost.

Please, please put this sign back. I love it. It's just so quirky like the bright green footprints, the shocking purple house, and the swinging bridge. These are the oddities that makes Ramsey, well Ramsey. These are what make this town, from this funny little island unique.

CRITTERS SUNDAY- THE DECLINE IN NUMBERS OF THE HOUSE SPARROW

SAVE THE HUMBLE HOUSE SPARROW

This is a house sparrow chewing a fly for his lunch. It was odd for me to snap a garden bird along the beach, but perhaps not so now with this particular bird anymore. The poor house sparrow used to be the commonest garden bird in the UK. Every garden had dozens of these friendly little birds, not so now. So why has the bird declined in numbers?

Modern living. I could elaborate and do a weeks worth of blogs in one post, but to put it in a nutshell that's it. What though do I mean by modern living?

Modern housing estates. It's all very well building nice shiny little boxes to live in, but please plant some hedgerows with them. These cute little birds thrive amongst the hedgerows. No hedgerows, no sparrows.

Off road car parking. Again a great idea, but birds don't live on a pile of concrete. Would it hurt to surround car parking areas with a little greenery for nesting birds.

Less gardens. Again birds don't live on gravel drives.

Too tidy gardens. Mow your lawn by all means, trim your hedges too, but don't obliterate the foliage. Keep it neat, but keep it.

Birds don't live in apartment blocks. Renovate existing building, not throw up new faceless ones. Birds love eaves. Where have all the eaves gone?

Save parks and and Nature Reserves! For all of us really. We really don't need another empty office block or supermarket buying land they will flatten and never use, just to stop a competitor buying it. Sparrows need green areas, hedgerows, trees and grass. In fact don't we need those too. Sure you dog that needs walking or your children kicking a ball would agree!

My garden has the house sparrow as a visitor. We too live in a modern house, but we have a garden, full of nuts, seeds and water. A tree to hide from sparrowhawks. Space under the guttering to nest.

Too find a humble house sparrow, scavenging for food along the beach, competing with the more adept shorebirds just wasn't right. We share this planet, we don't own it.

ODD SHOTS MONDAY - MARTIAN FOOTPRINT?

Ok, you got me. It's not to my knowledge a Martian, or any other kind of visiting alien footprint, but is a little bit of an X File. I noticed these footprints when we first came to Ramsey. Wherever you wander around the central town streets you come across these strange painted footprints with the little Chad type figure on. They only go in one direction though, which is odd in itself. A bit like Ikea when you get shunted in one direction from start to finish, and can't deviate. If you follow them you will actually do a circuit of the town. Useful then perhaps if you're a visitor. Tried to find out how old they are, but most people don't notice them anymore or think I'm weird for asking. Imagine the looks I got taking this! I hope you like the chewing gum decoration, not me, but probably the litterbug who I berated on my blog before.

Does anyone else have anything like these cute footprints in their part of the world?

The next bridge shot in the IOO shots series is tomorrow. By the way the footprint, Saturday's bridge shot, and Fridays metal theme/skywatch shot were taken with my handheld tiny Olympus. No fancy lenses, no zoom, no filters, on a sun setting. I do take most of photos on my Nikon D50(and even I want a better camera now) with a number of lenses, but I just wanted to encourage all those that only have a small point and shoot, great shots can still be taken. After all it's you that composes and times the shot, not the camera.

No footprints or aliens were hurt in the making of this post.

RAMSEY RUGBY TO THE TOUR DE FRANCE

Well the rugby season is over and I'll have to wait now to take anymore. It's not just he Isle of Man TT we have here sport wise. Rugby, football, kite flying, and of course don't forget Mark Cavendish. Some of you may of heard of him if you followed the Tour de France. He won a couple of Races, a Yellow Jersey Winner, and yes he's an island resident. In fact we used to work at the same place, at different times. In fact my old work station was previously occupied by him, then me. The hot seat.

I'm a bit pushed for time tonight, so this is a good time to dish out some more blog awards.

ABC WEDNESDAY - B IS FOR BLACKBIRD

The blackbird above may look like it's singing, bit it's not. One simple reason for this, it's a young female, and female blackbirds don't sing. What she was actually doing was fluffing out her wings and for want of a better word sunbathing. Yes we do occasionally have sunny days here.

Another Manx Cat Myth

This little ditty it seems is authorless. Not exactly a haiku, but certainly sums up another fishy story of how the Manx cat became tailess.

“Noah, sailing o’er the seas,
Ran high and dry on Ararat,
His dog then made a spring,
And took the tail from off a pussy cat,
Puss through the window quick did fly,
And bravely through the waters swam,
Nor ever stopped, till, high and dry,
She landed on the Isle of Man.
Thus tailless puss earned Mona’s thanks.
And ever after was called Manx.”

CAMERA CRITTERS - PURRFECT KITTY AND MANX CAT MYTHS

I am a confirmed dog lover, but sometimes even I crumble for the cat. This dear little pure white one with sparkling green eyes meowed his hello and proceeded to pose for several photos. He was rewarded with a tummy, under chin, and behind the ears tickle. I hope to see him again as he's so photogenic.

He's not a Manx cat, a stubbin. They as you may recall from another cat post are cats with no tails. Lots of myths and legends surround the origin of the Manx cat. Here is one for today. The rest will follow. Even with the tale, there are variants on the myth.

The Manx cat was invited onto Noah's ark to avoid the great flood. He refused the offer having found food and shelter on land and thought he would be safe from the flood. Only when the rising waters became so high the Manx cat fearing for his life ran to the Ark. Noah by this time had given up on the Manx cat and started to shut the door. The Manx cat jumped towards the closing door. Thrusting his way through the tiniest gap, he managed to squeeze almost all of himself through. Alas, his tail was not so fortunate. Poor Manx cat's tail was severed as Noah slammed the Ark's door shut leaving the cat now without a tail. Forever more no Manx cat was born with a tail on the Isle Of Man

RAMSEY SERENDIPITY

After yesterdays naughty bit of graffiti(I just shoot the facts, like them or not) I thought a nice pretty little pic would redress the balance. To all those people who haven't read the blog header and what the blog is all about and left very negative comments, try reading it properly. I say I will show all sides of the town, as it is whether that be good bad or indifferent. Today we have the good, the pretty, through rose tinted leaves!

Poyll Dooey Nature Reserve, has a series of nature trails meandering through it. I decided to follow one of these and came across these very vivid rich red leaves on a recently planted sapling. The sky seemed to be one enormous dirty white blanket of cloud, so I knew that the reds would pop out against it. Just how white the backdrop would be I didn't realise as the camera had been on the wrong ISO. When I uploaded I could see the white was completely bleached out. Normally I don't favour this look, but I just went with it and now don't mind the image. Serendipity and photography really do go hand in hand sometimes.

ISLE OF MAN TT, SUPERSPORT 1

ABC Wednesday had to be T for TT. Same as post yesterday, a bunch of images , no particular. order. As I've before, said posts all hit and run this week, got to be out and about.

This is the Monday Race, The Supersport 1. Quick who's who in the pics. 73 is local Guy Peter Hounsell who finsihed 42. Next is Chris palmer 14 and Adrian Archibald 13. They finished in this order in 11 and 12TH place respectively. Next Keith Amor, No. 4 who finished third. Following that is John McGuinness No 3 who finshed second. Steve plater is the next image, rider 1o and the eventual winner( Bruce Anstey was disqualified.) Final pic is Michael Dunlop 23 who finished
a respectable 1oth.

No racing today, but it was Ramsey Day. These pics may have to wait until next week as there is more racing tomorrow, the sidecars Pierre( I couldn't do the sat race). Ramsey Day is a fun day of stalls, sprint racing, stunts and kiddies entertainment. A bit of light relief and a day off for the riders. Not the photographers though.

Oh yes, have to say thanks to the magazine photographer who tried to get me into the media enclosure to have better access. He argued the point that I was actually the only one with Ramsey Daily Photo on the shirt and a local. Typical Isle of Man mentality, the answer was no. Laxey Lass, I agree with you about the courier, but it's international magazines that have approached me, never the island, and yes it infuriates me.

I'll get a T.shirt pic sorted at some point. Time for bed.

CAN YOU SPOT THE BIKERS WAVING AT BABOOSHKA?

Here they are then the TT tourists! These images portray a tiny fraction of the thousands of people that are setting foot on the island as I type. It's been building slowly, but this first friday always see the great swelling of numbers.

The images are in no particular order, just a mix to give you a flavour of my town around 6pm friday evening. I took them from 3 different sides of the crossroads at Parliament Square. You can see glimpses of the Swan and Central pubs, the Town Hall and Library and Ray Motors Garage. Compact is a word that comes to mind. For UK readers if I said Ramsey reminds me of Trumpton, they would understand the sentiment. Trumpton was a 70's kids tv show, a tiny town which had all facilities more or less within inches of each other. Not aware of it having Pubs though! That's why I draw the comparision between the two.

This post is a bit of a hit and run. Didn't get to the laptop 'til late so a quick upload, grab a few, quick crop, desaturate and post. They're just to give you an idea what happens to a kind of "Smallsville" town during the biggest even of the year. So did you spot the two bikers (yes two, if you enlarge) waving at me and the Japanese tourist resetting his camera missing all the action.
