Life's an Isle Of Man Beach - My World

Mooragh Beach, Ramsey

Keeping it simple this week and responding to a several requests for more beach images. So here we are again, walking out of town. As you can see the tide is out so you are able to actually walk out quite away. You see we have wonderul sweeping bays(two remember) but the sand is always damp due the incoming tides as I have mentioned before.

Towards the left handside would be Mooragh Promenade. We are actually further along the Promenade than we have been before. Behind me out of shot would be the harbour jetty way off in the distance now, bridge and Ramsey town. To the right is obviously the sea, but as we are an island you would expect to see land ahoy at some stage. You do, and that would be part of the British Isles, England, Scotland and Wales. On a clear day you can make out the landscape of the Lake District in Cumbria. Looking north the bay sweeps round to the promontory known as Shellagh Point. This is the closest I have taken you to it. Shellagh another Manx word. It appears Shellagh means willow. I have noted recently it's use as a girl's name. I'm not sure those using the name know of it's origin, or are Manx. I wonder if anyone out there knows of another meaning or anyone is actually named Shellagh? I'm still searching on this one. Just curious.

For perspective click the words in red below to show you stages along the beach. May help to put this scene context. For those that have read about the Grand Hotel on the blog, behind the white house on the left out of sight would be the Grand Hotel.

My husband's cousin is a Sheilagh. She happens to be graceful like a willow. (Lucky her!) Sheilagh's mother (and my husband's father) was originally from Scotland.

Love your beach shots.

EG-There is a Celtic influence here so there could well be a name connection.Cheers.

How wonderful to walk there in rain or sunshine! Thanks for sharing and for your visit.

Some places in Florida would be envious of your beach as we lose so much of our beaches every year in the hurricanes.

It looks like a fun place to swim - especially for children who could wade out quite a ways before hitting deep water.

Are there sharks in your waters?

Jane Hards Photography said...

Jacob- Can you believe we have basking sharks, down the South of the Island.

Lowell said...

I'd never heard of a basking shark, so I did some research. Second-largest shark in the world, but generally non-threatening to humans if left alone...called basking 'cause they like to ride the surface and "bask" in the sun or fresh air...

That's amazing. You're very lucky!

Very nice beach photos....I would imagine you don't ever get a lot of snow but I could be wrong. We came home from Las Vegas last night to MORE snow...yep...fun fun fun!!!

What a grand beach photo. Love the way you describe your view, also.

I was facing your way and thinking of your beach from one of mine this weekend. Lovely, lovely view.

That's some difference between tidal stages! I'd expect a few feet, several yards, but this looks like a good 50 meters between the tide line and the water.

But as always, you've captured it beautifully. The clouds look like they've been painted on.

Tremendous!

Babooshka: I enjoyed the neat beach, do you get clams from the beach?

I seem to be having some problems with blogger today. I hope it is fixed.

Thanks Babooshka, that's just what I needed to see today to take my mind off the -17 degree weather here in Toronto... a great picture of a beach. Very nice!

I always love the beach!

The beach looks very natural still, not terribly commercial and developed. I far prefer this, as there are better birds and wildlife to see.

Wow! Nice world. Oh, to live near a beach......

I guess one could do a theme a day. Do you have to do sky watch Friday every week to participate?

Gorgeous beach shot, Babooshka.
Great myworld posting.

Yes I have read that the Isle of Man has been subject to Norway in 400 years. The Norwegian Vikings were not benign. :)

It is nice to see a beach scene, the warmth of the sun and sand. Such a large beach too! Our beaches are still under a lousy blanket of snow.

Sorry for my late respons. I've been a bit busy.
I have some nice features around me but a photographer is privilidged in what one shows so most of my home town is just boring modern housing and not at all postcard like. Luckily some old bits have been left in places.

Funny how you excite about snow and I cannot wait for it to go away and to see beaches like this one free of snow. The clouds above are magnificent in your picture.

Judy said...

I would love to go walking along this beach!!

My name is Shellagh. =D We just found the origin a few years ago. Funny enough, my favorite tree was the willow before I knew my name's meaning.
