Envionmentally unfriendly

No I don't know why it's there

Can anyone tell me what they think that is sticking out of the water and also why? I know I have come across some strange things and shall we say interesting items but this bar or post of some kind looks a little scary to me. Put it this way, I wouldn't fancy being out and about on a canoe and running smack into or onto this as you bounced over the short drop of water. Ouch! This wasn't the only one I found. Roughly about 6 just poking out at various intervals along the rapid flowing water seemingly embedded in the river bed. Maybe an alien spacecraft crash landed and these are the remnants of the unidentified material. Maybe it's just a more likely mundane explanation like vandals clogging up the river with something other than a shopping trolley. That I would say is the more likely answer.Who knows? Who really cares? Who will do anything about it?

I'll leave this with you. I'm just the recorder of the images around me. To check out others monochromes see here

A bit late for Saturday isn't it?

I think it's the fairies.

Jane Hards Photography said...

It was 11.58pm though. Manx fairies couldn't lift those surely?

We get fallen trees snagged this way but you were close enough to determine this was no tree, right?

Jane Hards Photography said...

brattcat- it was too uniform to be a branch more like an iron bar, but it looked wooden. Weird.

telephone pole? odd that there were so many along the rapids.

Great monochrome shot, but does look a little scary! I, too, hope there aren't a lot of them!!

Probably just a wooden post that got washed into the water during a heavy rain. I've seen tree branches stuck in the spillway of a dam near here. Usually, it happens during heavy rain and/or wind. Eventually, they work loose and float on down wherever the water takes them.

Have had recent flooding? Maybe trees or telephone poles. I've actually seen large trees intentionally placed to hold soil and rocks. Very unusual. But nice capture.

Could be some parts of a fallen house. I do see bottles, etc in the sea and students and volunteers are always the one clearing the beaches during the school holidays..so sad.

It's a railroad tie.

Something to grab on to if you get washed over??

My first instinct is that is a log that has been caught. More intriguing is that you say there are several of them.

Is there a timber yard upstream?

Surely though you wouldn't take a canoe anywhere near a weir.

Which river is that on?

Jane Hards Photography said...

Loulee- It's Laxey near the Woolen Mill. Have a step away from Ramsey once in a while.

Perhaps to discourage water sports.

May be it was going to be a walk way?...
May be it was once....:-/
Curiously strange....
Is there any documents around with the old plans?...

I sense things sometimes and when I look at your shot I got this feeling of an old house/barn that the water is "screaming" about.

Like Dina said it must be some documents with old plans and people who can take care of this.

The pieces of the house want to rest.
For sure.
Doing no harm.

Gorgeous shot!!
If you want me to 'dig deeper' feel free to get in touch :)

The result of misguided railway constructionj

Curious, hmmm I wonder too. Good catch though ;)

I believe Aileni is quite close to the truth. It was probably put there for a purpose. In my country we have such as u posted at regular intervals to trap unwanted stuff like garbage, branches etc so that it can be removed at regular intervals and in the process keep the river clean?

Frank said...

It was probably a support post for something that was built there long ago. Water power was so important to early industry and manufacturing (as it was here in the US) and a foundation of some kind was probably constructed here for a factory/water-powered.

Its a male perhaps .-)))

Nice week wishes to you from Anne in Norway.

Strange, but it must have a purpose or it must have had one at sometime.

Makes a great shot now though whatever it is!

Is it going in or out?
Great shot!

You do make me laugh.

Carver said...

Maybe it ended up there so you could take an interesting photograph. Seriously it is hard to imagine and doesn't look safe but it's a great shot.

Barbara said...

Seems like they have been put there as there are more at regular intervals.

Kip said...

Makes no sense to me why it would be there.

Astheticaly unfriendly for sure! Wouldn't like to find that in a Kyack!

Something from the railroad, that pole?

Hey, are you up for translating the comment above mine?

It's probably painful for the river too - crashing down unto it like that.

Mojo said...

No clue whatsoever. My dad would probably have said it was there "to make you ask questions". And I have to say... in this case, he'd be right.

Looks like you got a couple of pieces of SPAM in Japanese.

I have no idea why the log is there but it must have come by accident. Maybe it is in a crack in the dam and stuck.

Its a viewing platform for the manx river faeries

I am thinking it broke off and headed down stream til it hit the falls and got stuck, it looks as if the falls are sending us a raspberry!

Abe- Just got back to find yep two spams. Makes a change to be Japanese usually Chinese. Have noticed they are doing the rounds again.

Amazing what you can find in the oddest of places. Glad you took a photo of it or I fear I never would have believed it. ;-)

Diving boards for trolls?

aspiritofsimplicity said...

If the falls are man made perhaps it is something to do with the structure itself. Maybe part of a dam? Perhaps something to hold on to if you go over? Either way...you won't catch me using it as a diving board.

AKO said...

You can see the same thing in the river where I live. They got stuck before when they use the river to ship the trees down to the sea and some of the trunks seem to be stuck forever. It makes the picture more interesting though. :)
