Time to go home
Sometimes you just can't photograph everything that goes on in a town, especially here. Nothing for ages then events and photo opportunities just appear like 3 buses at a bus stop after there have been none for the last hour. All or nothing. Doesn't mean though there isn't anything to photograph. On the contrary. Here is one of those events that I wasn't able to shoot from the start. Earlier you would have seen bands, a mini fashion show of organic and Fair Trade clothes sampled the local spices from the local curry house or even have a fair trade coffee. You would also have seen stands for One World and Tradecraft. What to do, how to join, what they are. You may even of heard the local member of Government speaking. Of course you just have to imagine this today or instead weave a story around the image above.
Never walk away without taking a photo even if you can't photograph the main event. By turning up late I got some far more interesting images than the usual standard shots the local papers tend to do in these situations.. You always have good old fashioned street photography. The girl now free to run around, the kids tumbling in the centre, generations chatting, the strange orange organic material adorning the normally sedate Courthouse. This is not how Parliament Street looks on a Saturday morning usually. To be fair I did get a few images of the dying embers of the band playing and the stands, just not the fashion show. Can't be in two photos ops at once. I did however get to chat to a fellow local and Mrs local who indulge in the odd rambling under a cloak shall we say if you click here . They were also modeling a little organic clothing ensemble and I did get a pic of them at a distance. So never walk away even if everything has been dismantled and people are leaving. Photos to be had if you just look.

Sometimes when going to an event, like a parade for instance, I am more drawn to people's reaction to the parade than the parade itself.
Enjoy the whole week.
I have to agree with ewok, I frequently find the people more interesting than the event itself. Looks like fun -- lots of people to look at!
Have a great week, Babooshka!

Hi Babooshka! I have the feeling that there's always something going on in Ramsey: bike races and now some band playing... Thanks for sharing. Have a great week and thanks for the visit.
I see Ramsey in a new light. We do have a lot here. Cheers.
nice pic. i think there is some pretty deep wisdom for photography and life in not giving up so soon, even if you show up late. nice post.
Oh I so like events It brings people together as shows on your nice picture
Babooshka: What a neat look at the people having a neat time afterward.
I like to see Manxies having fun. Well done again. Try the Laxey Fair some time for natural photos.
oh so very true...
enjoyed the post and your words of wisdom...always do ;)
I agree so much about the photographs after the main event often being the most interesting. You captured a great relaxed feeling shot here. I love it!
You didn't miss much it was a quiet do. The girl is cute.
We did have a good chat didn't we? In fact it was the first time that we had spoken to one another. And though I can't see myself in this great image I can see Mrs Mannanan in all her glory. Great post as usual.
I learn a lot from the way you look around. You are wonderful. Thanks for this great post.
M- I meant to say not on this photo but on two more I have. I can see Mrs MC now on the large image on file. You can't escape in Ramsey.
I love shots like this. All the personal stories beneath the surface of an event... lovely glimpse!
Interesting to see the daily life from your part of the world.
j'aime bien prendre les photos avant et après un évènement, cela donne souvent de bonnes photos, ce qui est ton cas.
Lovely moment captured.
Anna :)
Thrilling image, Babooshka.
You're right: we must never miss the opportunity to take a photo, even if the main event is over.
Its always nice to see people just sitting around on the grass. It means there is a relaxed atmosphere. I agree, there may be nothing and when it rains it pours
Great tips on street photography and photojournalism. Nice shots.
Well we all gotta go home sometime and went home with some extra interestings shots. See!! MB
Oh IOM! Not long now...lol!
You sound run off your feet! Must be great for business.
a brilliant capture as always! very insightful post too!
I totally understand what you mean. Sometimes there's more of an opportunity on the fringes -- especially for journalistic work. Sure you can shoot what everybody else is shooting, but take a look in a slightly different direction and you've got exclusive. No competition. It's risky, sure, there's always risk in everything worthwhile. But you go from being one of many to one of ... one. You eliminate the competition by playing a different game.
Brilliant post!
Babooska;) thanks for this tip . I agree with many above that the best part of events is normally the individual or people's reactions/actions. A different question altogether: my dh (who was at IOM 2009) asks if you know how Nicky Crowe and Mark Cox are? Thanks for beautiful photos always. Hugs Jo (South Africa)
Wonderful snap. The people participating in the event make it more interesting.
So much color in your town! You've been hiding it from us! Lovely summer day on the isle!
If I find out about the yellow chair, I'll let you know!
Jo- Your dh was here for the TT. Small world. Try and fin up to date news on the Nicky and Mark. It was a bad smash and lots of collection have been made on their behalf.
There are so many people who take pictures of an event that I prefer to go before or after, that's often more interesting !
I agree that setting up and leaving photos can be just as interesting.
I agree with you. Often the most wonderful things happen off stage!
Going only for the main show and staged events may produce nice shots, but you're absolutely right that the unstaged and unposed shots can be the very best. This one is so real.
Looks like you focus on their body languages.
Great idea! never too late to take a picture. You just inspired me!
Love that dangling leg!
It is the leg and the arm frozen in time that jump out at you.
What a lovely photo!
I´m a Swedish woman living in Singapore and I love taking photos:)
Have a good day!
To the Chinese spammer. No one is interested and no one will click your comment. We all know you are not a real blogger. Now go away.
Thanks to everyone else as always.
I just could not resist Babooshka to comment on this one, lol, about the Chinese spammer. I get those all the time too, so so annoying. The problem is that they probably send them automatically and never see you response. I just delete them, because sometime the google ads pick up the characters and display ads in Chinese. Hope all is well otherwise. Anna :)
I love taking photo what ever interesting at the moment I stand but sometime people are not happy with me especially at the public events:)
Anyway..happy photograping & let our photo tell the story to the world.
Hi Babooshka,
Thought of you this weekend when Cavendish won the sprint jersey in the Tour de France. He must be biking extremely fast up and down those streets you photograph!
I'm a late commer to the blog but I really enjoy it.
