Saint Maughold ( 488 AD) is the Patron Saint of The Isle of Man Yes even we have our own Saint. Rumour has it he was an Irish Prince, captain of a band of robbers, drunk, wife beater and all round bad boy. Not very saintly you might say. Here is one version of the tale of the bad 'ole boy coming over all sinner to saint. There are many as always with myths and legends you take one and I write it my way.
Patrick punished Maughold after he tried to make a fool out of him, silly boy. Not a good idea. Maughold placed a living man, yes still alive, in a shroud and called for Patrick to revive the dead man. Patrick came, placed a hand on the shroud, and left thinking job done, miracle ensuing. No! When Maughold opened the shroud, they found the man had died in the shroud. Oops!
Patrick criticized Maughold, saying he should have been helping his band of merry men towards leading good and honest clean wholesome lives, and told him he must repent setting him adrift in a oar less coracle.
Maughold drifted to this isle, where two of Patrick's disciples, Romulus and Conindrus, were already settled welcomed him.
For a time he lived as a hermit to show remorse. Long before ipods remember. It worked! The Manx people really liked this new good guy Maughold and chose him as their next Bishop.
So a little Celt instead of the Vikings for St Patricks Day. Many a Guiness will be sunk tonight on the island and many will be feeling as green as this image the next day.

Well, Babooshka, I love this story about St. Maughold whom I've never heard of. I'm American of Irish descent and was brought up Catholic. I have cousins living in Limerick - and is the Irish Sea REALLY that GREEN? Amazing! Happy St. Patrick's Day! :)
Happy St Patrick's day to you..... will you be enjoying a Guinness tonight?
Wow, so green. And I love the story too. I wish too that we have this same as you've wished for the vendor photo I've posted in my world. :) Happy blogging always.
I've never heard that story before! So St Patrick didn't have a sense of humour then? My favourite story with St Patrick in it is the tale of Oisin - it is so sad and beautiful. St Patrick's really only a footnote but you can read so much into it.
Is St Patrick's Day a recognised holiday on the Isle of Man? Or does St Maughold have his own day?
Babooshka: Thanks for sharing your neat look at the Irish Sea for a grand celebration.
Mary - yep the sea varies but some days it's even greener.
Kitty- Yep he has his own day which I will cover.
Leanne- No Guiness for me but I'm sure a Jack Daniels will find it's way to me.
Happy Lá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig everyone!
Ah, Babooshka, I do love your stories and this one is no exception! And I do love that green Irish Sea! Thanks for sharing this as a prelude to St. Paddy's Day!
Happy Day to ya B. It must be the colour. My favourite photo. Thank you for remembering.
Oh, a green ocean. Too beautiful. Full of mystery. :)

That's my kind of green, Babooshka. God alone knows how it happens, but it's just great!
Saint Maughold was quite the fellow. The Irish Sea is quite beautiful.
Amazing that water is that green that far north in what's got to be pretty cold currents. The green usually means a lot of algae, which normally only flourishes enough to affect water color in warm water. But I'll not question the truth of it, lassie. Ye've always been good to yer word as far as I'm knowin'
Beautiful photo, and perfectly placed for St. Maughold...er... Patrick's Day.
That's a story well told about your island's saint. The sinner part was pretty funny. Glad he turned it around and did some good.
Great green photo of the sea.
Mojo - The greenest water here is actually on the west coast Peel. We get a variety here but some days in the right light it could be the Med it's so Jade and we get such clear rockpools. I'll ask my other half Gary about the sea colours as he knows his stuff, coastal erosion, geology and whatnot as he studied them. An idea for a post forming.
wow! amazing green sea!
Happy St. Patty's Day!!!
Thank you for the wonderful post and the great photo. Have a wonderful St. Patrick's Day and thanks for sharing.

Happy St. Paddy's Day :D
The Sea is awearin' the green I see. LOL!! The green/blue in the northern lakes out this way is caused by different minerals in the rocks in the water. MB
Great story shared and you have narrated in your own classy style. ipod and all, ha,ha.
I never knew that green was the color of St. Patrick's day, how dumb of me. :)

a nice homage to the st Patrick and that beer casts in stream goes on...
Your green sea really caught my attention - and I'd forgotten it was St. Patrick's Day. When I lived in Australia you couldn't forget- the world and his wife seemed to be dressed in green.
So Happy St. Patrick's Day to you both.

Wonderful GREEN!
I visited Western Ireland in the late 70's and came away enchanted. I also understood why it is called The Emerald Isle.
That photo is brilliant! Close up even better - it's like a sweet wrapper.
Are there a few faces the colour of the sea after the big night?
Fun to read .. and what a lovely picture :) Interesting post Babooshka !!
You can't get any greener that that. LOL.
Wow! I can't believe that's really the sea. How neat! I had some green beer in celebration - a real Irish-American tradition!
We were talking about how green Ireland is yesterday. Nothing here ever gets that green!
Eirinn Go Brach!
Every thing turns green on St Patricks' Day. Hope you had a good one. I think I did a "Babooshka" and missed a day. For some reason I can't remember yesterday. Figure that one out?
Is the Irish Sea really that green? Amazing. They have to use dye in Chicago.
I love the story of Saint Maughold. I've never heard of him before. I'm glad he turned out to be a good guy in the end.
That's the the greenest picture I've ever seen. Now go for the orange one!
