When wood a tree trunk be called a stump? Monochrome Odd Shots
Stump - What remains after of the tree trunk and roots after the top section of the tree has been felled. Ok that makes sense. Pretty straightforward so far. Can someone explain to me then what they think has happened here? I came across this stump/trunk in the heavily wooded area of the nature reserve. This was a close as I could get but all around seemed untouched apart from this one tree which stuck out like a sore thumb with it's top lobbed off. I checked the area around it and as you can see the foliage around is undisturbed. So not only why would this have been done, but how. I assume it's those corn circle aliens or possibly the Manx Fairies lopping off tree tops to make fairy furniture or something. So until someone has a rational, practical explanation I will as they say print the myth. I know the truth will be fairly innocuous and the reason why it was done so mundane, but in keeping with the island being all myth and legend hiding under shrouded cloaks(fog, nothing more, than fog) thieving mermaids, barmy witches and cheeky fairies I just have to play along with the spooky tale.

Here's my tuppence-worth: the tree was rotten and a danger to the public. The forestry commission came along and cut the top off using a cherry-picker to stand on...and that's as far I get.
I agree with Kitty - a good explanation. As to the newspaper maybe someone else in a cherry-picker!

I love this shot. Not sure why it would be like that in a nature reserve. I have had some damaged trees removed at my house and didn't want to pay to get the stump removed, it's more. So I asked them to keep it tall enough so I wouldn't miss it as I didn't want to trip over low stumps that would get covered by ground covers and leaves.
Welllll.... it appears as though your stump's been there a while, so perhaps the surrounding foliage grew up around it post-decapitation? Scruffy brush like that takes no time at all to spring up, and this tree looks like it's been down for a few years at least. Plenty of time for the lower-lying brush to take over.
Circle of life and all that.
Second possible explanation is that it's not actually standing where it grew and in fact isn't a stump at all but a section of a trunk stood on its end to mark a path for the faeries and trolls and sprites and nymphs and other mystical folk.
Or as a practical joke.
It is not the same tree as the reunion is it? That would be too odd. I have a theory you pay people to plant newspapers and chop tops off trees and paint there house purple to have funny photos. Lol/xx

Looks as if it is reaching a claw out to nip off the whipper-snapper beside it.

Someone above said it; The stump is old and the surrounding growth is fairly new. The trunk was removed and the stump was left at that size as a mark for the UFO enthusiasts to start a new urban myth.
Who would guess that an ordinary, old, ugly, unartistic tree stump could stimulate so much imaginative dialogue! Now that's a real odd shot with echoes!

I vote for barmy witches. A tree that big would be much too large to be any use for fairy furniture ;-).
Great play on words here you clever woman! I like the idea of fairies making their furniture, so I will not bother thinking of a rational explanation.
The paper made me wonder too. But fairies probably like to know what's happening arount them too, so...one of them dropped it there?
