MANANNAN'S CLOAK - MONOCHROME ODDSHOTS

Ramsey hides under Manannan's Cloak

Manannan is the mythical god of the sea, lord and protector of our land, Isle of Man. Manannan appears in many other Pagan and Celtic myths and legends but for us he is the guy who put the "Man" in the Isle of Man, and why you sometimes see the spelling of Mann as well. What is Manannan's cloak though? I can tell you one thing it's not and that is snow. I have really missed not capturing any snow shots his year. Back to Manannan's cloak this weeks Monochrome Oddshot.

Manannan's Cloak.
A mythical shroud of mist that was thrown over the island to hide us from our enemies.
Manannan was also known to be a shape shifter, so next time to you ask a local the way, be polite. It could just be Manannan and if decides you aren't a worthy visitor he will shroud and protect us from you. Shape shifter sounds like something out of Star Trek doesn't it.

We still get the mist descend upon us. The image shows a rolling mist on the mountains, sometimes it rolls in from the sea. It is an awesome sight, especially when caught my sunlight. Sometimes a white blanket, a gold sheet, or a lilac candyfloss gently engulfing the island. Underneath the cloak is the North Barrule Mountain. I never tire of seeing this eerie mist especially when travelling over the mountains and your view is totally obscured. It is so evocative of every horror story, and fairytale you can think of. A bit like the island a horror story built on a fairytale, the legendary blog and Babooshka is the mythical creature that brings you the words and images that won't stay hidden. Now if I can just find That wallaby..

I remember you making mention of this in another post some time back. Fascinating legend. And as always, a compelling photo!

How are things working out for you guys these days? Any improvements in the work situation?

I saw your name at East Gwillimbury's blog and thought you must be a Kate Bush fan! I am correct. I also see you're a cat fan - I am too. Please visit my blogs if you get the chance.

I love Kate! What are your favourites (because you can't have just one, right?)

That reminds me, we haven't had much mist this fall. Can turn any landscape into a dreamy movie set.

Well, the photo was plenty but the legend makes it even better. I will now impress at dinner parties with the "Man" in Isle of Man.

Oh! Yes I remember very well this Manannan. Very impressive powers indeed. He manages to modify natural elements at his will.
For our best pleasure since you share the visions with us Babooshka.

The mist is so tactile looking, I feel as if I could truly reach out and touch it, and the photo is enriched even more by knowing the legend behind it.

Fascinating stuff.

sorry to hear you are having to leave the IOM

I love your mist photos and the stories that go with them. Sorry IOM has not been as welcoming as it ought. Still France is such a beautiful country. What wonderful photos we are going to see from there. What part of France are you planning to move to? On our agenda to move there in the near future as well.

gerald and Mo-The move will take a while so we'll be around on the island still. We are just moving our plans forward to move to The South of France. A long slow process but wheels as they say are in motion, cv's sent contacts made. A photographer and artist will be better appreciated there as to be quite honest we are being frozen out here. I would love to pour money into the manx economy, but it seems they are not interested. If you are from the Isle of Man and you are reading this think about where you have ever seen my work on the island. You haven't and that is the problem.

Thank you for the info! I have learned something today - that means the day was not wasted. The details about the shape shifting reminds me of myths about the old Norse Odin, who was supposed to have similar gifts.

And I agree - it looks great in B & W.

Very nice and interesting to read about these old legends, of which some survive!

Isle of Man will obviously lose someone(s), but if France can be the winner, I'm not against! There are some nice specificities in southern France also including e.g. the provençal language and the culture that goes with ...

No more clear ideas about where exactly yet, I presume?

lunarossa said...

Love the shot and your story. I love the Isle of Man but I've never been there. I've translated all the tourist information and booklets into Italian though! I've always been fascinated and a bit intimidated by the mist/fog but a love legends related to it. My dream place on Eartch is Venice (Italy, of corse) wrapped up in the fog coming from the Laguna. Ciao. Antonella

Manannan! Very interesting myths
I think it was in Peel that we saw "The Story of Mann"
It was next to the Kipper place and opposite the Castle....
I think...It was very interesting though....

The clouds look so massive they almost seem to be taken from an old Cecil B. deMille biblical movie... :-) Fantastic!

Loved hearing the mthology of the Isle of Man. I went to that web site and had a look around. It's a shame you can't make a go of it, but it is hard to feel too sorry for you after reading you'll be moving to the south of France!

Cheers! Alla vostri salute e benessere!
