100th POST. ABC WEDNESDAY - X IS FOR XENODOCHIAL

My 100th post just happened to coincide with ABC Wednseday and one of the hardest letters to work with. I was tempted to have xenophobia aimed squarely at those idiots who email me to tell me stop the blog on the grounds I'm not from Ramsey, but I didn't want to tar perfectly good people with an image, just to illustrate the point. Instead I found this happier pic, from the archives which suited my needs for today.

Xenodochial then? What a funny word! It is according to varied sources an obsolete word, rarely used word, Greek, and/or Southern Hopitality. Xenon of course is Greek for stranger. Xenophobia is the fear of strangers, naturally. But was of this curious little word? Xenodochial literally means friendly and hospitable to strangers. What a fabulous word to sum up The Isle of Man TT Races, Blogging and the CDP community.

The kindness of strangers who have consistantly supported this tiny island blog, encouraged me to continue, emailed me, blog awarded me, linked me, and even put me on the Community favourites list. Fleetingly of course. Again I wouldn't have known this unless one of you hadn't emailed me.

So, in a way X turned out to be a fortuitous letter. Xenodochial is alive and kicking in the blog world, if not in my own home town. Cheers.

Did not find the word in my dictionary, but know the xeno in xenotransplantation when operating a pig heart to humans.

How sad that people can't appreciate the good publicity you're giving the island, even though you're not a "native". What are they doing to promote the island they want to keep so pure and unsullied? Grrrr.

I wondered if I'd get the same kind of abuse, for the same reasons, but people have been very happy to say good things about my blog. Shame on the small-minded xenophobes who can't see beyond their prejudices.

Good word and well done on the 100the post!
I can't understand why people would object to you writing a blog just because you aren't 'from' Ramsey or indeed the Island, makes no sense. Surely you are bringing the Island to the attention of a wider audience. Do these people who complain bother to write a blog themselves to promote their gorgeous Island, I just don't understand...

Jilly said...

Congratulations on your 100th. That's a difficult letter to work with. Strange you should have anyone who isn't happy that you blog about your island. Keep it up, you've got a great following now.

What a great X word... Xenodochial... I've got to remember that so I can impress everybody at the next party I go to...
Actually, sometimes I have less fear of strangers than I have of the people I already know...   Wonder what the word for that might be...

X-cellant post to mark 100. Ramsey locals must be pretty small minded. Very sad. Personally, I like your style :)

High fives for you, Babooshka! Happy to be here today and congratulate you on your hundreth post....a job well done!! Beautiful image and great choice for the occasion - in the groove and riding high. Thanks for sharing your Isle of Man with all of us.
Thanks too for the new word. Nearly chose xenophile for today, but xenodochial has a nicer tumbling sound off the tongue and far more interesting.

Well done Babooshka! Brilliant X and another new word I know. I suppose the island must have what I call a "small village mentality" in that you have to have had family there for at least 200 years before you "belong"! Sad, but true. The village where I was born, brought up and the only place I ever lived as a child does not consider me "local" or "one of them" because my parents were from out of the village. Sad, but it is my home and yet, they don't consider me part of them. That's a long time ago anyway and passed now - I moved on (literally and mentally). I just mention it to empathise really. So ignore them. You are very much part of the place. It's as much your home as theirs.

Congrats on your 100th post. I just got to 100 too, and if I hadn't posted about it early, it would have been on ABC Wednesday. ;0)

I like very much your interpretation of X, and even more the additional comments.

Therefore I have at last done what I have should done a long time ago - added your site to my Links (if you don't mind?)

PS I'll look forward to the stones!!

Of course these people who are complaining about you writing a blog are, presumably, reading your blog. If it is so terrible to them why read it?
It's like people who complain about tv programmes, if they are going to offend you, don't watch them in the first place.

Keep up the good work!
