BRITANNIA PUB, RAMSEY

Britannia Pub, Ramsey, Isle Of Man
Fancy a pint?

When I asked you what you'd like to see of Ramsey on the blog top of your list was people, but you all understand the logistics of snapping away at islanders can be a little difficult. Next on the list was pubs. Not flash bars, but a proper pub with a non trendy down to earth name, where you can get a proper pint of beer and bag of pork scratching( don't ask!) Voila!( did I really type that?) here it is. I suppose I have to tell you all about it now too don't I?

Situated on the corner of Peel Street and Waterloo Road is The Britannia Hotel- to give it it's official name, is colloquially known to us locals as the Brit. Unlike other local pubs that local name is logical. You wait 'til you hear the rest. Not today though. Boasting not one, but two rooms. The Pool Room and what you'd call a Lounge room. Don't be fooled my the quiet exterior of the pub. It's hub bub of activity.

The quiz night for starters. Ramsey has it's very own quiz league where most of the pubs take part. One off quizzes often take place here for charitable events. Play darts anyone? Ladies and Gents darts teams, and of course a darts league. Then of course there are the bands. Yes real live bands playing a very mixed bag of goodies for your listening pleasure from rock to blues to contemporary. Even been know for the folk club to meet here. Told you it was busy.

To go with the very straight forward text for once I tried my hardest not to take a technical professional image but a simple snapshot with a local leaving the shot, as the daily photo should be. In case you are wondering, no not one of my local pubs, wrong side of town. I have been in though for the occasional quiz. One more thing about the Britannia that may or may not still happen. You could buy Valentine's and Mother's Day cards at the bar for the forgetful drunk.
Now how about that for enterprising.

Does your local pub/bar sell anything other than drinks and food?

I enjoy seeing places like this in other countries - I'm interested in what's going on elsewhere!!! Very cool and it's been a while since I've been in a bar, but the last time I checked... no, they sell nothing of the sort!!! hehehe!

Pubs? What are pubs? We ain't got none in PV!
Can we see the pub's sign next please? I ran across a good one in Worthington, Ohio that was called "Old Bag of Nails" - excellent name. My favorite English pub is Seven Stars somewhere btw Gatwick & Southhampton. Run by an Irish gent whose son is the chef & makes the most amazing broccolli soup & all the traditional pub favorites (did not sell any other items as far as I remember.)
So, cheers & bottoms up!

I love the pub, but surely that's not the winter sky?

Rule Britannia!I haven't been in your neck of the woods for quite a while. The last pub I was in was an English one in Seattle. Quite authentic; owned by some English. I love pubs and would like to try this one.

Great post, Baboosh! The Brit sounds like a good spot to quaff a pint or two. Hopefully we'll see/hear more of your pubs.
Mother's Day cards? :)

Great contrast between the blue and the yellow. My local used to be a post office & is unsurprisingly called The Last Post. They do some good meal deals. Curry and a pint for five quid for example.

Amazing colours.....To your question 'no'.

I love pub quizzes. When I lived in England we had a team and used to win quite a few free beers. 3 Brits - one form Liverpool who knows everything about popular music, one from Cllethorpes who knows everythign about football, me, whoce expertise is literature and geography, and my historian husband. But not only did we have that covered, because we were two Aussies in the team, we were always able to answer the inevitable "sneak" question - like what is the capital of Tasmania?

This is a great photo. This pub must be an old house. It's very smart. Thank you so much.

lovely old building. makes me excited about going back the the UK for xmas and having a proper pint in a proper pub!

about snapping people, it can be hard, can't it. i've started carrying a card around with me with my blog address on it. i approach people and explain that i run a blog and would love to put a photo of them on it and i give them my card. when they see i'm not just trying to steal their photo, they don't usually don't mind....at least, not so far!

I'm not sure I'd want to see too much of that yellow after a few too many, if you know what I mean! Lovely shot though - look at the colour of the sky!

I wouldn't have thought this was a very busy pub from the exterior — looks quite charming.

My favorite bar has an art gallery on the ground floor and has book launches there every now and then. Bands play every night beginning 9pm on the upper floor, but they have indy movies and even improv comedy early evenings. A writers' and artists' haven!

Pubs have certainly diversified since I left the UK but then with the no smoking ban maybe they have to work harder.

The colour's a bit bright even for me but I wouldn't mind a drink there. Sky looks great.

This looks like a place my husband and I would visit if we were there! Pork scratchings?! Do you like them? We have pork rinds here, fried pork skin, sounds gross huh?!

Nice building and great colours contrast! I do fancy a pint, yes! :-)

I love the building. I am sure I would try my hand at the quiz league. Not very good at darts.

I'm not thinking I've ever seen a pub like that here in NY. Love the contrasts! Pork scratchings are good - I had some just the other day :-) Here, we have two varieties - pork rinds are light in colour and are airy, and cracklings which are darker in colour and hard and dense.

My second favourite pub in Ramsey. The new lick of paint has really lifted the the place. You have a brilliant site. I am gobsmacked by the photography.

We don't really have a local "pub." You can hit a dive bar (not recommended unless you've already had several pints), or a franchise-every-restuarant-looks-alike place for a drink. We prefer to drink at home...and at the neighbor's houses!

Great post and very nicely composed photo.

A proper pub indeed, both inside and out by the look and sound. Very comforting places. But ... pork scratching??? Do tell :) I've seen cows rub fences, but somehow I have a suspicion this might be a "pig (not horse) of a different color" to coin a phrase ...

we dont have any suchg thing as 'the local'. is the local very important to you? if it is, my town might seem a tad boring...

A nice pint is tempting. I have Guinness in the fridge now but it is still a bit early. When I was in London last month I stopped in Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese and Princess Louise to make sure I hit the tourist spots but also The Links in Fleet a few (too many) times to make sure I enjoyed the non-tourist ones too.

Nah, wouldn't know anything about local pubs. Who needs them when a great Indian restaurant just opened a ten minute walk away. Makes me feel lucky.

Heck yeah, I'll have a pint. The color makes it even more attractive...like a moth to the bright light.
