RADIO CAROLINE, RAMSEY HARBOUR

Radio Caroline was an illegal "Pirate Radio Station" born in the 60's that used to broadcast offshore from several ships and international waters off the UK. When researching Ramsey Harbour I discovered, to my surprise, that one of these broadcast locations was Ramsey Bay, just off the Harbour.

Radio Caroline was founded by Irish music industry business man Ronan O'Rahilly in 1964, it 's first broadcast was 28TH march 1964 was from the ship Fredericia. The station( and remaned ship) were named after Caroline Kennedy, J.F.K's daughter after O'Rahilly read an article about the family whilst buying supplies in Dallas.

Radio Caroline merged with another Pirate Radio Station, Atlanta in 1968 and The Fredericia moved to Ramsey Bay, broadcasting as Radio Caroline North. A celebration of It's 4oth Radio Broadcast from the island is to be held later in the year in Ramsey.

Radio Caroline has had many incarnations and still exists today. With the advent fo BBC Radio One and later Commercial Radio the need for Pirate Radio Stations subsided. Caroline therefore is no longer docked in Ramsey, but for a short time The Isle Of Man, and Ramsey itself played it's part in the formation of the of the current radio structure we have now. Isn't it plesantly surprising what you find out about the place you live in when you undertake the City Daily Photo. What have you discovered about your place I wonder?

That would have been a good skywatch picture. B&W pictures are special to me. Interesting blog.

My mom used to listen to Caroline and Luxembourg many moons ago. The harbour is larger than I imagined. Super image.

I remember listening to this station at night with my older brother and sister... I thought they were pirates and I imagined the DJ had an eye patch and parrot.
As for what my town might be famous for.. we do not need to dig back far.. I live in Hyde, so Dr. Harold Shipman and the Moors Murderers spring to mind. The only good thing to happen lately is our World Boxing Champion 'Ricky Hatton' as got the town back on the map for something good.

The Harbour does look grand in this photograph. Never heard of Radio Caroline, but my dad said it was better than radio One ever was. He said you could see the ship from Ramsey shore.

Love the pic, particularly the B&W. Really makes the interesting shapes pop out.

My biggest discovery in researching Mckinney has been its central role in local and even national politics. The first post-civil war governor is from here, a president's mother was born here, the longest serving speaker of the house of representatives was from very near here.

Wow this is great information on how it all began or the Pirate Radio, now I am wondering if we have something like this here in San Diego.

Nice blk/wht photo too.

Interesting story! Isn't that cool, the things you learn when photoblogging? And the places you discover?!

I really like the industrial feel of the b&w. We had a little pirate radio station in Knoxville a few years ago, it broadcast out of a trailer (caravan), but I think the Feds shut them down when discovered. Too bad - their play list was so eclectic.

Yes, it is wonderful... What we discover and notice, when we have embraced our photography! I hope we all appreciate how it has changed our lives. :-)

Thanks for this photo, Babooshka! The b&w gives it a special effect.

I grew up with Radio Caroline in the sixties doing my homework with the radio at high volume. My brother did the same in his room and my parents would just sigh and shake their heads...

Oh my goodness I'd forgotten all about Radio Caroline! I don't think I heard it (I grew up in the 70s so Radio 1 was well established by then) but I do remember listening to Radio Luxembourg, which was also a pirate radio station based on a ship (I think it was out in the North Sea, east of East Anglia).
