Storm clouds, Queens Pier

on a rainy day, or not

Instead of a sunrise, storm clouds on the horizon. Looks can be deceiving though and the ominous threatening storm passed over the island and the sun shone.

Under the pier reflections

                                      Still

Back out with the little point and shoot camera, leaving the big DSLR at home. Sometimes, it's better to have the smaller camera, you look for a different view.

September Theme Day - Big - Queens Pier - My World

Peer at the Pier

September Theme Day Big, My world

Has it been a month already since our last theme day. It appears so. As I reside in a teenie tiny town beside the seaside, which I do like to be by I had little option but to choose, the bridge, the beach or the pier for the image of big. Not my usual lateral thinking involved today for the theme, play it straight down the line with a simple long shot towards the horizon with the illusion of the pier going on forever and cutting through the sky. I have already used the pun from"from pier to eternity before" so I won't say it again. Oops just have. Went for a black and white today too which suits the aging old queen, the pier that is.

You may have noticed I have been awol again from the blog, well net in general. It has rained everyday since my return from hols and no way does my camera go out and play in a down pour. More than two raindrops and the merest hint off a breeze seems to affect the server too. I kid you not it's been hellish here and I will be using archives for a while as I realky have no places of interest to show you inside. Not unless I do a pub tour of course. Well if you really want me too....

RUSTY OLD QUEEN IS SICK OF THE SIGHT OF RAMSEY, OR IS SHE? .. - MY WORLD

Queen Victoria was sick not amused!

My world

Actually I think Queen Victoria was amused by this Pier, after all it is the aptly named Queen's Pier of Ramsey. Ah yes like the Swingiest of bridges we have the other often photographed image here the Pier. An image needs a story though and I found this amusing one below just to add a little twist on the earlier images. Of course it has little Babooshkaisms, in jest.

Queen's Pier is as I have said before an iron pier(that would account for the rust then obviously) which was built in 1886. At one time it actually had it's own sweet little tramway running the length of it and how quaint a little cafe too. Even had royal visitations. Queen Victoria landed upon these shores here in 1847. Actually she was supposed to enter Douglas harbour but heavy seas made that nigh on impossible. What a carry on! What to do? Come and dock at Ramsey, the North of the island instead of course.Prince Albert came ashore and had a peek about town. Queen Vic though decided to remain aboard. Apparently she has suddenly come over all queasy weasy and developed a bout of seasickness. Yeah right couldn't be bothered I see to grace our fair town. Never mind Queen B rules here now anyway.

So that was (sort of) the tale of the Royal Visit, and that's where the Queen's Pier, the rust bucket that may or not be saved, but presently remains closed slots into the Isle of Man back back stories. Unlike the myths and legends at least this tale is true. The idea of Queen Victoria puking into the Irish Sea rather than set foot on Manx soil here amuses me though if not her. What doesn't amuse me though are the images that have suddenly appeared on er so called photographic sites that are almost identical(obviously sub standard) to mine. Manx sites too. Get your own ideas, you've been doing it long enough. Call your self professional photographers. Shame on you! Tut Tut! If you haven't got your own ideas then you really shouldn't be photographers!

FROM PIER TO ETERNITY - SKYWATCH

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside, don't you?

Skywatch

I know, bad pun but I just can't resist. Couldn't resist this image above either. The sea so still and the clouds just breaking to reveal the promise of a blue sky. Very different to yesterday and one day of snow image I showed you( which I am still quite excited about sad to say) that has since disappeared. Anyway back to the pier. Remember I said we have two beaches in Ramsey, well this one is not the one adjacent to the park this is the other one along Queens Promenade. Guess what the Pier is conveniently called Queens too.Where are we today then?

In the distance is Maughold(pronounced Makold) a small village named after St Machaoi. Maughold Point is the most easterly on the island. It's also the closest point to England so you can imagine the view on a very clear day. It's also where Johnny Depp stayed when he was filming the Libertine over here. If you take a walk under and past the pier you will arrive at the arches. I took this at the top of the promenade steps that lead to the beach. It looks like the pier is actually situated on the land but that's just perspective. Here are some other images to put this view in context what is around here and some pier close ups. Click the words in Red.

last week we covered the golden hour in photography. This was around noon. Sometimes photography rules just don't apply. This image needed to be flat and smooth no shadows so noon was the best time to shoot it. I know it's one rule for one image and one for another. Just think fight club. First rule of photography really should be- there are no rules in photography.

QUEENS PIER, RAMSEY- WHY SAVE NOW? - MY WORLD

Queens Pier Ramsey - To save or not to save?

I was going to The Grand Island Hotel and it's close next month but today we had breaking news. No seriously this is like a big deal here. So I give you Ramsey Queens Pier. Last time I posted the pier it was certain to be demolished. Read the history then I'll tell you what going on now on this quirky island. Funny business to me!

Today has been declared make or break for the pier. There will be a vote my the Tynwald, the Manx government on saving or not saving. This means provide a £5million restoration plan. Now I have to say I don't understand this, and judging by the comments I've seen on the I.O.M. News website neither do other people. I was one of those that wanted this saving, I have posted and said that before. So when we had money on the island we not do anything to save the it and now when we have an economic downturn, recession and no surplus cash has £5million been quoted as an amount that could be approved. None of this sounds right to me.

Two things. The blog will continue. It will still be a while before we can move, along while. Next. Find me on Facebook and join me and Ramsey Daily Photo which now has it's own group. Come and say hello to the world on there. I'll be looking for you.

QUEENS PIER, RAMSEY, ISLE OF MAN - MY WORLD

Ramsey Isle of Man is my world. This image is Queens Pier 2/100 for those keeping count.

Thanks in advance for all those new people stopping by as I have been named "blog of note" today.

The Pier has since fallen on bad times, as I pointed out in my skywatch post. A group the "Friends of Queen's Pier" was set up to hightlight the plight of the pier, and to try and save it, from the neglect it has suffered over the years. It's future is still uncertain, but at least it has now been secured. We need to preserve this pier as many of those in the UK has been lost to the elements or even fire. Save our Pier. I know I'm home when I see it coming along the coast road.

For more my entries click MY WORLD and thank the skywatch gang once again for another inspired idea.

If you want to see loads of wonderful alternative images of the pier and excellent write up go to my world contributer Mannanan, British Isles

QUEENS PIER, RAMSEY - SKYWATCH

Queens Pier
Ramsey
Skywatch

Friday already? Must be skywatch.

This is Queens Pier Ramsey, Queens Promenade.

In subsequent years the Pier has fallen into a state of decline, no longer used as landing port, closed to visitors and declared unsafe. The future of Ramsey Queens Pier remains uncertain.

Like the Swing Bridge, Queens Pier is a Ramsey icon that I never tire of photographing. So I will be doing 100 of the pier as well from different angles and times of day. Therefore this is image 1/100. Mad idea, probably. Been into Ikea lately? Same image, different angle.

ABC WEDNESDAY - Q IS FOR QUEENS PIER

Queens Pier, Ramsey is a post I've written before, but as it's "Q" I thought I would take the opportunity again to highlight a worthy cause, saving Queens pier.

In subsequent years the Pier has fallen into a state of decline, no longer used as landing port, closed to visitors and declared unsafe. The future of Ramsey Queens Pier remains uncertain.

When I did my previous post about the pier work had just got underway to secure and make it a least safe before it fell itno the sea. The work is still continuing, albeit intermittently. Rumours, suggestions and options are still being considered as to renovate or demolish. As I've said before I do hope it's the former. The approach to Ramsey, from Douglas, just wouldn't be the same without it.

If you'd like to join ABC Wednesday please got to this link MRS NESBITT'S PLACE

QUEENS PIER RAMSEY

Queens Pier, above, is an impressive sight when you are driving into Ramsey along the coast or mountain road.

In subsequent years the Pier has fallen into a state of decline, no longer used as landing port, closed to visitors and declared unsafe. The future of Ramsey Queens Pier remains uncertain, although when I passed today at least work to make it make it safe from collapsing in to the sea was being undertaken. Rumours, suggestions and options are being considered as to renovate or demolish. I hope it's the former. The approach to Ramsey just wouldn't be the same without it.
