Ramsey Rocks, sunset

                               Street party

Ramsey Rocks, I've mentioned before is a annual event that takes place in the town along the harbour quayside each July. For one night only, bands, kids entertainment, food stalls etc are out in force. Except this year. This year was a washout, and cancelled due the inclement weather. The image of a full town turnout resplendent with sunset, was, unfortunately last year. Oh well, what's another year to wait. The local pubs however did a roaring trade as many of the bands played indoors and those already out for the festivities made their way there too, minus the kids.

Derby Road, Ramsey, Isle of Man - Sunset

                                             Mirror image

Skywatch this week, a dusky pink serene scene. Mirror image reflections along the harbour inlet, Derby Road, looking towards Bowring Road. The sun rises over the beach, and sets inland, always casting a myriad of colurs over the harbour inlet, Sulby river and buidlings. No two days are the same, which is great for a photographer on a night time walk.

To see a sizzling orange fiery sunset of the same view see here. You'll see what I mean about the colours of the setting sun. Unreal, yet natural.

Ramsey Rocks, Ramsey National Week

                               Summer Nights

Next week on the Isle of Man is Ramsey National Week and the image above is from the annual festival, Ramsey Rocks which takes place down by the harbour quayside. Local bands, family fun, food stalls and  kids entertainment.  If  it rains, there is always the pub. Several pubs in fact.  Possibly the busiest night out in the town, or at least one of them.  Fingers crossed for sunshine hoping for sunshine.

Harbour inlet

                           Water like glass

Another old one on the little point and shoot. Locals will notice, the absence of the swimming pool, which would now be part of the skyline, next to the residential property left of the image. The harbour inlet which ebbs and flows out to sea in the image, and behind to Mooragh lake out of shot. Taken on North Shore Road, Ramsey, Isle of Man

Laa jiu, a selfie and fishing boats

                                Two for one

Today on the blog I have combined two nemes. One day a week I introduce a Manx word, as I live on the Isle of Man. The Manx word today is coincidentally actually "today," which in Manx is "Laa jiu." The other part of the blog post contains what we are calling the "shy selfie" and somewhere in there you can spot the shadowy image of the photographer.  Image taken down by the harbour, West Quay, where moored fishing boats are at rest.

Balck and white, harbour sunset

                        View from the pub

The colours were amazing stunning spectacular and all those adjectives some people use to describe their photos, when it should be for the viewer to decide. Stripped of colour, Ramsey Harbour, view from outside the oneof the many pubs of the town. Not a bad pint, and not a bad view either, even if it lack colour for some.

Harbour silhouette

                                   Evening walk

After the workers, fisherman  mainly, have gone home or to the pub, the stillness of the evening along the harbour. The boats are moored, and the sun sets on another day.

Harbour sunset

                                 Sundown

I photograph the local rugby team home games on Saturdays. As the game is played over the Autumn through to Spring, the light is fading fast as the nights draw in towards the end of the game. The walk home through the park and onto the harbour inlet at this time of year coincides with the setting sun and occasionally the last embers of a fading sunset, cloud cover and evening light allowing. It's a working harbour, as you can see by the silhouetted cranes and sail masts. Win lose or draw, always a sunset to focus on. Rugby in hail storm photos

Sulby River, Sunset

                              Summer nights

Taken on a Friday night pub crawl around the drinking spots of Ramsey.  Summer sun setting over the harbour. Beer and sunshine, making way for beer and snow this time of year.

Ramsey swing bridge, open for business

                              Boats and bridges

The iconic swing bridge has been put of action for over a year. Closed for repair, maintenance and a fresh coat of paint. The bridge is a walkway connection from one side of town to another. It's a short trip across the bridge, or a long walk round to the rugby club, swimming baths, Ramsey Park Hotel, Mooragh Park, other beach, hospital and home for those that reside that way. At long last residents of the town can use the bridge again, though boats have to wait a little longer for the bridge to swing back into action and can moor this side of the harbour inlet again. A welcome sight to have the bridge back in place, and a much shorter journey for me too.

Photo taken from North Shore Road, overlooking the harbour inlet.

The Mitre Hotel, pub with a view

                                Beer and boats

The Mitre Hotel has recently undergone a refurb, but the great harbour view remains. Not many pubs can claim a view straight onto a quayside. Another place where you can find locals belting out karaoke, charity nights for worthwhile local causes, carveries and varied food themed nights upstairs. Downstairs, you can hire the private rooms for functions, or listen or to the local folk and Manx music groups. You can even join in at open mic sessions, or for those musically gifted can take their own instrument of choice and join in. Pub bands are also a regular feature. Something for everyone here, can be found at the Mitre. Even if that something is a quiet pint and an evening sunset.

See here for a night out at the Mitre in aid of a local good cause

Dusk, down by the harbour

                                or daybreak

I think it's dusk by the dusky pink light, though I've had to check the camera time. It's a working harbour as you can see my the silhouetted cranes and boats. At this time of night or day though, very few people about. Dusk then. Everyone's in the pub

Ramsey, the park to the harbour walk

This time last year we had snow!

As the connecting bridge is out of action and under repair, for the foreseeable future, I'm taking the long walk round to the park and other beach. That's the harbour inlet full of visiting boats, people taking advantage of the long holiday weekend. With views like this though no complaints about the long walk round.

Ramsey Harbour, Skywatch

                                     Sunset

Taken along Derby Road, Ramsey, Isle of Man heading towards Bowring Road. For other skies around the world click here.  A setting shot captured in between pubs. One of the few places in the world where a pub crawl and photography walk coincide beautifully.

Down by the Harbour

                          The real world

City Daily Photos are all about the place we live, the good the bad and the ugly. I could post a sunset everyday, however pretty, isn't the real representation of this small coastal town. The harbour is still a working one for a lot of island residents, and not just a marina to dock vessels. The sea is a livelihood for many island folk and on a small island a working harbour and dockside is as a pleasure to see along with a sunset.

Ramsey Swing Bridge - Skywatch

Twenty three

Skywatch

So while I'm not here I just had to leave with the most iconic bridge in the world. Well the most iconic bridge in my world anyway. You all know by now what this about, why the bridge again, and again and of course again. This then would be twenty three shimmering and shining in a blue glaze. For those of you who know what I'm else I'm on about you can also see a dolphin, but not your usual kind. The clouds just obliged nicely by planting themselves at varied intervals around the sky just for aesthetic effect.

Again I hope you are seeing these OK. I'm not here, I'm lost in France on holiday. I know lucky girl, but I do have a photography assignment while I'm there, so not all fun. Who am I kidding. Photographing France, never a chore.

E is for elegance - abc

Swan lake

Abc this week is an taking a E

Well hopefully these scheduled posts are working out and you should be seeing an elegant swan glides effortlessly in an eclectic mix of floating debris for my E this week. Well I hope that's image you've got. Why scheduled, I'm not here folks. Hopefully having lots of wine, and crepes while you lot slave away on me jolly holiday.

You know where this is my now the harbour. The floating debris might not be the most graceful setting but I'm sure you'll agree swans are always elegant. Well that is when that are not being bad tempered about a camera being shoved in there face for a photo to be captured.

Dolphin of a different kind - abc

Not what you were expecting

We are dipping into d for abc

Not your usual kind of dolphin is it? Until fairly recently I would have referred to this as some kind of wooden structure sat in the harbour for the seagulls to eat and poop on(not at the same time of course) and the cormorant to hunt for cornered fish. Well both of those still happen but there is more to this structure than that. So what is it?

A dolphin is usually a wooden structure consisting of a number of piles driven into the seabed in a normally circular upright pattern and bound together with wire rope as I have found out. What is it used for though? They are used as part of a larger dock structure or landing port. It is also used as a navigation tool too on a very minor level. The aim is for fixing vessels to a particular body of water to make ready and secure for loading of goods and materials once berthed alongside it. As the harbour is I am proud to say still a working dock (albeit a small one) I can now see and understand the need for this little kind of dolphin as more than just a bird pooping perch. Not sure the birds see it that way though.
