I lived here, a small town, on a small island, in the middle of the Irish Sea. Welcome to The Isle of Man. My time on the island in mages

Monochrome shadows
A black and white study of Gladstone Park. For those who were here for this week(click here) it is the same tree and twisting shadows, same time of evening but captured from further back along the road, minus the bend and obviously in black and white.
As I pointed out the other day, how the camera can deceive. This is such a clean looking, serene lonesome road isn't it. Only at this time of night.

Lake Placid, in a sense

I am a name not a number
Reflections of the Week
Ok it's not really Lake Placid. It is a placid lake though. Google will be confused. For the moment it's it's working title, or as Hyde DP humorously commented on yesterday's image, #13. Very true. Technically the image is a number. I always give images a title, even if it's a library only image just so I can find it again. I'd never find dc10205 and know instantly that it was this image, but a name I'll recall and which named file it's in. You wouldn't believe how many names you can up with for a puddle. No, really you can if you let your imagination fly.
Happy puddle, dopey puddle, sneezy puddle. As you can see I really take my filing system seriously (she say in mock ironic tones.)
Another reflection of the little houses on the hill behind the park. Just tiny silhouettes. The longer thin lines are the lamposts. I said some would not be easy on the eye. This is pretty to look at but you have to use your imagination to envisage those black shadow boxes as buildings. If you live in Ramsey you would probably guess that's Mooragh Lake as low as I've ever seen it and I'm photographing inside the Park, over the lake onto the road. I'll show you another image. In fact I will try and get one for skywatch so you can compare. Time of day for this image was late afternoon again. Same as yesterday manual setting and left as taken.
It's my Birthday today, and I never ever work on it. I get very drunk instead.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH STREAMING LIGHT
This is the jetty in Ramsey. As simple as that for a subject. The sun was behind the jetty. The tide as you can see was low. The sun high noon sun shone through the jetty slats bouncing the light on the low water creating a white glow. The jetty slats broke the light as it streamed through creating the illusion of the slats being black. Desaturate the image, so taking any colour out which in this case was a slight blue tinge to the water and there you have it, the above image.
Ok it's not that simple! Firstly you have to spot the potential in the subject in the first place. That is what separates photographers from people who take photographs. Composition. So many potentially good images are ruined by poor balancing or setting of the image. Think before you click. Have you got what you want in the right place. Timing. The light was perfect at this time, but only at this time. To get that slither of white swirling shimmering light was at the time of taking the image or not at all. The ensuing tide would have been too reflective casting a white sheet of colour over the water rather than just that central column with the outer edges silver and the slats jet black. Taken once only and desaturated to a monochrome image. No other alteration apart form re size for the blog.
Now it's your turn. Go on and post your results with no photoshop!
Unfortunately I won't be around to answer to many queries. Laptop time is now down to the bear minimum. Emails are on hold. It's why you have another archive from the real photography section. Not so much whether you like it, but to learn from.
