Night time photography
As it is ABC on the blog, another Manx word or saying. I thought Y might be a difficult letter, but a whole list of words appeared. yn vooir = the waves. Night time photography, with the Nikon, crashing waves under moonlight rays. Living on an island you are never far from the sea, and midnight strolls along Queen's Promenade are the norm.

Laa jiu, a selfie and fishing boats
Two for one
Today on the blog I have combined two nemes. One day a week I introduce a Manx word, as I live on the Isle of Man. The Manx word today is coincidentally actually "today," which in Manx is "Laa jiu." The other part of the blog post contains what we are calling the "shy selfie" and somewhere in there you can spot the shadowy image of the photographer. Image taken down by the harbour, West Quay, where moored fishing boats are at rest.
Image Nikon D50, my old camera, around noon.

Kayagh
Misty
For those of you who don't know, I blog from a small island called the Isle of Man, from the even smaller town of Ramsey. I thought it would be ideal to introduce a Manx word with each image on the abc round each week. Although most people speak English, the Manx language has been introduced and spoken again on the island after almost dying out. As a comeover, someone who came here from across, UK, this is as much of an education for myslef as it is for the reader. So word for today is Kayagh, meaning misty as it was the morning of this photo. One of the first I captured when I moved here, on a film camera. The jetty and lighthouse, looking the same today as it did 12 years ago. Only the camera has changed, but I intend to find that film camera and take it up again.

Manx Magic
and fairy dust skies
With mornings like this on the Isle of Man to wake up to, I don't wish to be anywhere else. Well except the South of France on colder days here maybe. The mythical Manx fairies, Mother Nature or Pollution. Who knows, but it's a nice view to capture and start the day. My office is the beach. Lucky, yes. Sunrises, not just for tourists, all year round.

Skyhill Plantation
Down there in the distance, along the coast, is the town I blog from, Ramsey, Isle of Man. This is part way up the long walk to the top of Skyhill, through the Plantation.
Skyhill is on the outskirts of Ramsey. A good place to view the town from was established in 1948 and replanted in 1965. Covering an area of 54 hectares it's a lot of walking and at one time home to a pony trekking centre
Skyhill itself was the scene of a battle (of Skyhill) in 1079 between Godred Croven, Norse and King Fingal Manx, Croven hid some of his men in the woods of Skyhill and ambushed the Manx. Unable to escpae escape, the Manx surrendered and Godred proclaimed himself King of Mann.
See post below for the view of Skyhill from the town.

Snow fell, not Snaefell

First snowflakes of the winter appearing on the mountain, North Barrule, as viewed from Mooragh Park. Not enough for a snow day, so pack those sleighs away for a few more weeks and get back to school. That's the adults btw. When it hits the urban areas, the towns of the island, and the roads, then everywhere will come to a standstill and the island will be taken over by snowmen. My Icelandic friend, the Norseman will understand the Snaefell, snow fall on the snowy mountain zzzzz. He will also call this mountain a hill. It's blogging thang.

Sky Hill, Ramsey, Isle of Man
Skywatch sunset
Sky Hill overlooks the town of Ramsey, Isle of Man. This image was taken on a walkway adjourning Ballure Road and the Mountain Road, the road leaving the town to head to Douglas, the island Capital. The Hill gets its name from the Battle that took place there in 1079 between the invading Vikings and Manx people. Another iconic place in the small town I live. Further reading about the Battle of Sky Hill can be found here.

North Barrule
View from Albert Tower
North Barrule is the hillside you can see in the distance. The second highest peak on the Isle of Man. Over on Barrule, on a clear day, you can see other parts of the Island plus Scotland, Wales, England and Ireland. On a not so clear day, you'll end up walking in circles trying to find your way down the hillside, getting lost in the Manx mist known as Manannan's cloak

Ramsey 5-47 Bowdon, Rugby
Half Time
Most Saturdays I can be found at Ramsey's local rugby pitch photographing the game. I've photographs wins, losses, draws, cup finals, both won, lost and survival games. Unfortunately this survival game became a relegation result for the local side. I'll be back next season, and so will the team. Hopefully photographing a promotion result and a few more winning cup finals.

Ellan Vanin is the E
Another river walk
As usual I try and educate you in a little Manx, the once fluently spoken language of the island I live on, the Isle of Man. Don't study the image to hard to focus on the river or the foliage for the E. It is the big picture you should concentrate on, as a whole. In fact I could have chosen any unused island photo for this one. E's are good, a great letter to use, as there are so many Manx words beginning with E. I digress. Ellan Vannin is in fact the Manx name of the Isle of Man. Tune in next week for more crazy Manx words.

Skywatch # 87
GothicBack with a very moody, brooding, Manx Gothic sky. I'm lucky enough to live on a weird little island that weaves a lot of fairy magic to produce these natural, pure colours. So, rather than tell you of the freakiness that happens here on a daily basis like I normally do I'll let the image tell the story. Looks like Mordor to me, but then again, I would think that living here. I know the darkside of this island.....

Quallian is a puppy

This week Abc is bought to you by the letter Q
I'm full of flu, blargh, and it's soooooooooooooo boring that I've decided to cheer myself up with an image of a very cute (and slightly mad) puppy who I took for a walkies along both beaches. I was going for Queens Pier and an explanation of how the pier came across it's name, but I'm much rather console myself with a doggie image. So where does the Q come in doggie or puppy and no, the young whipper snappers name does not begin with a Q. Confusing eh? It's back to the Manx lanugage again. Quallian is Manx for puppy and to be puppyish is quailianagh, of which this cutie definitely is. Also fast too, swift of flight and fascinated by seagulls, who are learning to flee faster than this quallian.
Short and sweet, I'm all snotty. For more Q's here

Oghyr
Abc this week is bought to you by the letter OI know what you're thinking,( actually I don't. I don't presume to be a mind reader) shouldn't that be "b" for berry? Well it could be be next time around, but today we have a slight twist on the letter and we are concentrating on the berry part of the image.
Oghyr simply means berry in Manx. "What the hell is Manx" some of you out there are asking (again maybe not... I don't presume anything) "and what is she on about." For those not familiar with the blog, Manx is the old language spoken on the island on live by some folks. So fortunately when it comes to Abc I can taken blatant liberties and trawl through the Manx language to match any word to any image. Cool. Oghyr is not the only Manx word for berry, just the only one beginning with O. Others are - berrish, caor, semyr and soo. The photo taken along the bridle path, though I have never once seen a horse down there, escaped wallaby or Manx fairy.

Just when you thought it was safe!
Sorry I left you all with a group of drunks, I mean dedicated rugby players celebrating with yards of ale at the end of yet another rough game, but well I'm back now so perleaaaaasssse no more poking me on Facebook. For a start that really hurts a girl and it's sooooooooooooo rude ya know. If you have stumbled across this blog looking for a sensible travel guide, a little Manx history and ooh how wonderful it is living on Whicker Man, sorry the Isle of Man.....think again! You will get that from time to time, but most definitely my way. What ya see is what ya get, and how I get up in the morning is how this blog works. So, Shoprite our local supermarket (nothing super about it at all, oxymoron) if you sell chickens that go off before their sell by date and ruin Christmas..... I will be be annoyed and name and shame. One thing only I guarantee you, a photo. If you're lucky the odd photography tip. If you are even luckier I may throw in some Manx culture or a Manx swear word, I mean Manx word for seagull or some some nonsense. Well I will until they catch me and have to go back to hiding in the woods for a while.
Oh the photo. Nothing special to kick us off. A walk along the river, low tide down on one knee doing the old artsy fartsy bit with (cliche alert) setting the composition and of course this just had to be in monochrome dahlink to allow the hollow of light through the whatever that stone thing is sticking up out of the water. Look I told you, I do the photography but if you want I could pretend it's an ancient Manx obelisk that the Pagans used to worship and sacrifice virgins at on May Day to ward off maurauding Vikings. Think I may have to go into hiding.

Clause for thought
A quick monochrome. As some of you know I've has bigger fish to fry, so to speak and time is needed elsewhere. Here is a cute kitty, a Manx cat I found outside the old swimming pool. Looks so meek and mild doesn't it? Watch out though. This kitty did his duty, purred, preened and nuzzled me.I got several shots before the back arched and he had quite clearly had enough, hissed at me and went on his way before I could get him to sign a disclaimer to use his image today. Hey cat if you're out there I owe you a fee which I'll quite happily pay you if you contact me. Fairs fair. I'm using your image, least I could do is pay you. Which leads me nicely to the next paragraph.
Apologies for the small image. I can no longer show large images due to them being stolen. As you know photography is my living and each time someone uses an image of mine illegally then I lose money. You wouldn't go into a shop and steal the products so you shouldn't do it on the net. That is what copyright is for, to show ownership. No hidden clauses, it's that simple. Basically a multi national company, run by a very famous entrepreneur has used my image without my permission, offer of payment and have even deleted my copyright off the image. I am also not happy with the article the image is associated with and would not have let them use it for the article in question. Can't say anymore here for now, but you can check my Facebook status and scroll down the posts to find out who it is and what I am doing about it and the new group formed. The kitty above represents me the underdog, a Manx lass( by default of living here not born here but representing my island town ) taking on the big guys. The gloves are off the claws are out. The cat fight has begun. It concerns you if blog with images too if you don't want them stolen.
Not a cheery post for me but I hope you understand why. Thanks as always for reading.More monochromes from a bunch of us can be seen here.

Y is for yiarn
Key of the door, 21What is yiarn?
You are all reading this and thinking I know what this image is and it's not anything at all beginning with a Y aren't you? Certainly not a yiarn. Not that you know yet what that is. Only found out myself yesterday. You think I have lost a letter again don't you? Well it is that certain landmark of the town I reside ( 21 for those who know what that alludes to, nudge nudge wink, wink, say no more, walls have ears) and it is also yiarn. That doesn't stand for what it is, that stands for what it is made from. The material the bridge is made of is iron and the word iron in Manx, the native language is ...... wait of it...... yiarn. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water the old RBS jumps out of the screen at you.
If you have uncontrollable urge to dive below 21 then click here to find out what all this numbered images refers too. Ramsey Swing Bridge is an iron bridge then, but not the worlds very first Ironbridge. Coincidentally I used to live near that very first one too. So it begins.

HAR MOOIR AND HAR - ABC

Pretty in any language.
This week ABC Is brought to you by the lettter H
babooshka ramsey daily photo http://dailyphotoisleofman.blogspot.com/
This week ABC Is brought to you by the lettter H
Har Mooir and Har what are they? Not H for higher ground as I'm out and about above the town, but it's not that. Behind me to the right would be(click) North Barrule Mountain. To the left would be Ramsey. I'm stuck in the middle with you. What you can see down by the sea is Maughold Head( pronounced Mak old remember.) That's the promontory you could see through the pier last skywatch.Still doesn't answer the question though. They are of course Manx words and here's today's collection of h's with a island language twist.
har mooir - oversea
Looking out far and away oversea we would gaze upon Merry Old England, but remember we don't call it England here. Oh no. That is far to easy and logical. Note from a small island we are the mainland here so we refer to England as....
har - across
Simply that as across is the name of England here. Don't ask me I don't make the rules.
So we are on the higher ground looking oversea towards England/Across. Har mooir and har. Hands up all those who thought I was speaking Klingon? You want to try saying them never mind reading them. Well could be (click) Manannan's Cloak-. If that is not a Star Trek Cloaking Devise I don't know what is! I often wonder whether Klingons are based on Vikings descendants of the Manxmen too. You did see my biker photo didn't you?
Enough now I want to get a doughnut and a coffee. Mrs Nesbitt is a visitor to the island no less, is the lady with the letters to see to ABC, which really is easy as taking candy from a baby or 123 whichever floats your boat.

F IS FOR FLOWER
Peek-a-boo!ABC this week is brought to you by the letter F
Last round I had the flower fuchsia which is also known as the Tears of Mann. Yes Mann. Back to all those Manx spellings again this island's rich language throws up. So that would be Tears of the Isle of Man then. This time around I have plumped for a tulip from Amsterdam. That is Amsterdam via the local Supermarket in Ramsey which actually has them all year round. I rarely have flower photographs and I have for both F's. That would be F for flower as well then obviously. For more tulip info click the word Wiki. I have to be honest doing a flower write up isn't for me and Wiki does have lots of generic info for you and sub species and what not. I'm sure my flower people friends out there who I rely on to name wild flowers for me are tut tutting but I'm afraid it doesn't float my boat in the way some other subjects do. I'm much more interested in the issue of language. F for foreign language to you F for friendly readers out there.....
...... such as the F word, Fastyr mie- Good evening in Manx. I will have to use more Manx words in the blog for you. Not that I actively speak Manx. Heavens no. I'm trying to master another F, French. Ooh la la, I digress. The F I really wanted to show you of course are the Fairies that definitely don't live at the bottom of the garden, specifically the Manx ones. Flitted away to freedom at the very thought of being photographed no doubt. Yes I am having another F tonight
F for fun because.... It had been noticed I have not been around on another F Facebook the blog

MY RAMSEY POSTCARD?- SKYWATCH

Wish you were here?
Skywatch
This definitely wasn't today but a recent image. Sometimes the blue skies benefit from cotton wool clouds. This is one of the harbour from yesterday photographed further out standing on one of the two jetties. I photographed it with the bench slightly in and not tucked into the corner to show you perspective and scale.Wish you were here don't you. On a day like this I'm glad I'm here. What do you think of this as a postcard? It just has that kind of UK seaside look. I may keep this just for me though. I just like it. Simple as that.
So I promised to reveal all today. I was at the Manx Super Third Thursday meeting of the Social Media club concerning the new Social Networking site manxgraduates.im. In a nutshell (Babooshka speak to you) it's place for Manx graduates and Isle of Man employers to find each other and encourage islanders ( think just left University or working in the real world) back to the island for those prestigious jobs. What has that got to me with me, well nothing but the blog is a great vehicle, as it's become so popular, for letting Manxies abroad know they are needed back here. So that's why I had to break cover. You try explaining to people you are Babooshka and no that's not my real name and glaring at the photographer( hypocrite, how bad am I?) for taking your image. Very naughty I took my name off for the photos. At least he had a Nikon. Weird to have people say they follow your blog in person, even weirder telling people not to reveal who I am. It would be easier being a spy!
Anyway I'm back undercover tonight. Many thanks goes to Sherrilynne Starkie from Strive Notes for organising the hoopla and the invite. What you don't know folks is Sherrilynne has been a huge supporter of the blog for a while and it was about time I showed my face at one of these functions. The lure of strong black coffee was all it took.
So safely back home and back to the job in hand of sifting through the images. I'm trying to decide what image to have as a new business card. Also maybe branching out into ghost writing other blogs, paid of course which I've been approached to do. Not sure about this and wondered if any of you writers out there do this at all or know someone who does. Don't even get me started on Consultancy fees. All new to me, how about you? Advice always appreciated.
Skywatch watchers can be found here. Many thanks to Dot for the inspirational idea, Tom for the first care taking and the My world gang for looking after skywatch now.
