Well what kinda lady were you expecting?I always think this is a funny name for a butterfly. Painted ladies just have so many connotations. You just know someone has googled and ended up with Vanessa cardui (to give the butterfly above her latin name) and not Vanessa, Painted Lady offering... well you get the gist. Anyway where was I? This is the first Painted Lady of the year here. I have seen lots of conservation maps that say this butterfly does not migrate here. Hello! Here's Vanessa. She must be lost then along with the many others we get.
Is it true that in North America this butterfly is referred to sometimes as a Cosmopolitan? I have posted this question before. Lots of websites say this but no one has confirmed it. I'm feeling quite lazy tonight and in need of being a couch potato so I'm going to leave you with a few links all about the Painted Lady.

Beautiful photo...I've not heard of a Cosmopolitan except for in a drink or magazine,lol,...since I'm not a butterfly professional, my guess is a Monarch? But I think those are more rusty in color? We do have this one in your photo here though, would help to know the correct name!
Pretty butterfly, Babooshka. I've never heard them referred to as a cosmopolitan. My kids and I reared some from caterpillars last summer. We enjoyed releasing them once they all emerged from their chrysalids.

Babooshka: I had several Painted Ladies around the house last year, the same kind. They are a colorful butterfly.
That's an amazing butterfly - I think 'Cosmopolitan' is the perfect name for them.

It is a Painted Lady, you can tell by it's spotting. Cosmopolitan is an old local name in some North American States. I don't believe the name is used today. I'll get back to you. Thanks for the butterfly links.
They are my favorite type of butterflies to admire because of their interesting designs and colors.

Butterflies always mean the spring is just around the corner. They haven't drifted our way yet this year! Can't wait to see one of these "painted ladies."

This photo conveys so many things - the colors are splendid...and the butterfly (whatever it's called) is gorgeous but there's a feeling of action, almost like the butterfly is a airplane coming in to land.

Painted Lady? Cosmopolitan? Up here in the far north of north America on the U.S. side, we simply call them butterflies. Original, eh?
More painted ladies and less fat hairy bikers!, although they have their rights too. I wonder how this one got lost and appeared in your island, maybe she wanted to show off, with all the make-up and the gloss and glitter in front of the rest of local catwalk models.
