SULBY RIVER, POYLL DOOEY, MONOCHORME ODDSHOTS

At a distance this image always looks like like a shipwreck at low tide, along Sulby River. This image had been under water for a month or two now due to the heavy rainfall, but when the riverbanks relented, the rain ceased, this strange scene was still there. This is as close as I can physically get to it without actually going down onto the river bed, which you shouldn't do anyway. There is a path along the river for a reason. To walk on! The river is to look at.

A far as I can tell it's actually tree branches embedded into the riverbed with what appears to be seaweed of some kind draped across it. When it's icy this area always takes on an otherworldly charm, like Narnia. It's not icy just yet so I went for a mono shot( just a straightforward desaturate colour) to see if it would appear ethereal and for me it has in a odd eerie way. Something ghostly about the whole innocuous scene. It could be perhaps those Manx fairies have draped there shimmering attire over the deadwood. Who knows? They are a little cheeky.

Blogger was off for sometime today, so was my server too hence little activity this end. Gary has just built his new website, my turn next. Why is it when you plan to undertake certain work on your laptop it all goes awry. Naughty Manx fairies again possibly? Perhaps they don't want me to show you the fairy magic they weave throughout the island or is Manannan out with his cloaking devise( Star Trek baddies merely borrow it) to thwart prying eyes.

I like it when snags are left in the river naturally. They're interesting Around here, a snag for some reason looks like a reason for rescue workers to "train" in the water and remove it.

LB,

Buried treasure maybe? Construction by riverbanks has this every day. I never think to photograph it. Lesson learned. Thanks babe, this is so spooky. I'll email you the results.

Narnia! You make me laugh. It does look creepy. Heard there was flooding some parts of the isle? Hope all ok.

I like the richness of the black and white tone in this photograph.

I'm sorry to hear about your laptop going awry. I hope it'll make peace with you soon. ;D

It certainly looked like a shipwreck in the thumbnail.

I've been watching too many procedural crime dramas lately, so I won't share what I imagined in this shot. But I do like how it tweaks the imagination.
Tell the fairies to piss off or I'll zap them with my phaser.

I'm thinking it looks sort of like a carcass...with an arm reaching upwards for salvation! Come on by and see the one I posted this week in sepia tones. :D

That's a lovely picture - very atmospheric.

Best of luck with the website-building. I'm going to have to think about that in the next year (hoping to do some freelance stuff, not photography though). But I'm trying not to think about it just yet!

Thanks for your comments on Sibiu as well as Glasgow. I'm really enjoying reliving the experience of living there (I was about a 5 minute walk from the 3 main squares in the centre which have been the main places featured up till now. Not all of it is that sweet, but the centre is ridiculously photogenic!).

It does look like a shipwreck, a creep shipwreck!

Definitely odd. Star Wars meets Mad Max or should that be mad Manx.....I've noticed a lot of debris in the harbour and on the beaches after all the rain we've had. More to come I expect......

That's a very interesting shot. I can see how it would look like a ship wreck from a distance. That's almost what it looks like here.

this is quite the mysterious shot. Perfect for this October month, it looks like a creature emerging from the river!
Good catch. I like it in black & white as well, adds to the intrigue.

At first glance, I thought you had found the remains of the Loch Ness Monster...or it could be a shipwreck. Great odd shot! BJ

It is rather weird shot, no it makes me to feel weird..but I would like to tell You B, that Your posts are very educative and I often print them to read at home...

It does look like a shipwreck and, by their nature, they're always quite eerie.

It does sort of look like alien life form has devoured it--and then spit it out.

Diederick Wijmans said...

Katney is totally right: it looks like something that has drowned at first and was then spit out!
A great effect, though...!

I think I am going gaga - I thought I had commented here first thing this morning.
That is a fascinating shape, the top of a whole tree perhaps, the trunk being down in the mud.

Narnia like is a great analogy. It definitely has great possibilities as an ice sculpture. Look forward to seeing how the Manx ferries decorate this for you:)

Neva said...

wow....this looks really strange...especially when you say it is tree limbs....very interesting......you have a wonderful way of photographing your odd shots! I can't wait to see it with the ice around it!!!

It is just spooky.

Narnia! I see a bit of Aslans's tail:)

Interesting. It could be a big animals's skeleton, too.

To me, it is like a deer trapped deeply, I can see the horns clearly!!!

Very eerie. Something out of a scifi movie.

You write very nice. I've never done a monochrome type shot but you are right in the innocuous mood of the photo. I wondered what it was before reading your post.

That's a scary effect in monchrome. Very odd too.

What a fabulous image. Somewhere else - an art gallery - it would be a work of art. Super shot.

It looks really weird, but most atmospheric. Who knows what might happen there.
The fairies seem to have relaxed their hold on my computer, at least for the moment!

Ah, but you can find such fascinating bits of nature when walking along a stream or river bed. I always enjoy it when I can. It's a place you don't often get to explore, and it - like tidepooling - reveals more of life than you'd seen before.

You're right, this DOES look like a shipwreck!
