WHITE CAT MYTHOLOGY- CRITTER SUNDAY

Everybody wants to be a cat

The friendly white cat is back. Until I know he or she's name I will refer to it as Duchess. Surely a starlet in the making. Can't you just picture Duchess with diamond choker.

I wonder if anyone has found anymore updates on white cat mythology?I found a little more here below

The new ones
Some sailors will not board a ship after a white cat. The cat has to be taken off and board after the sailor.
Dreaming of a white cat talking to you is sign of a new baby.
Saying good morning to a white cat meaning a smiling day. Not saying good morning to a white cat means a crying day.
White cat passing a white door means ill health is upon you.

The previous ones
n cat lore white cats are a symbol of light and good.
In the UK a white cat crossing your path is considered unlucky.
It America it is considered lucky if a white cat crosses your path.
Also too though in America it is considered unlucky to see a white cat at night
To dream of a white cat is considered a fortuitous omen, a portent of glad tidings, creativity and a contented spritual life.
To kill a white cat leaves your soul to the devil.
A white cat is often considered an angel, say hell0 and they will watch over you.

Unlike the black cat myths, the white cat has little attached to it inmythology. In some versions of the tale of Rapunzel she had 3 white cats to help her spin her hair into a golden ladder for her lover. Unlike the Manx cat and the black cat, the white cat seems to be relatively myth free. Perhaps you know of a white cat myth of superstition in your part of the world?

For more wonderful camera critters see MISTY DAWN Camera critters and be sure to leave a nice comment for Misty' s own outstanding posts.

More manx cat myths to follow.  Just waiting for another Manx cat to pass my way to photograph.

Meaow for now

Don't know any myths and legends about white cats. Do know they have blue or green eyes. Sometimes one of each! This one is a real cutey. Yours?

No Mo. I'm a dog person, but cats just make great photos.

That's one beautiful cat !!!

She needs and emerald or turquoize collar, depending on the colour of her eyes :-)

Duchess is so beautiful and I love the way he/she being white on the black background of your blog with the white writings look. It is really amazing!!! Well done!!

Duchess is a beauty! I'll remember to say good morning to every white cat I see. :)

I love how she's showing her belly like a puppy. She must really like you!

Cassie the cat said...

Inviting you to stroke her belly is an honor. White cats carry ill feeling towards sailors which is why they board the ship before the cat. I like your strange blog.

She sure is pretty and I never knew there was so much info about white cats good to know. Thanks for the visit.

Interesting stuff...I didn't know most of it. Are all white cats females? I think that's so. Anyway, she certainly is a charmer!

That's a wealth of information! I was going to write a longer comment but a white cat just crossed my path, so I'll log off now while it's still safe!

Snapshutter said...

Interesting. I'll have to remember those.

I don't have any cat superstitions. I like ALL cats. ;-) Cool photo.

A diamond choker would be fine indeed!
My Grandma gave me my first cat - it was white.
Love all these myths.

Tamera said...

Oh my goodness she looks just like our cat Lilo! Only Lilo's a little bit chubbier ;) I certainly hope the statement about white doors/ill health isn't true, since all of the doors in our house are white and we have a white cat!

That's a beautiful photo of a stunning cat. She looks like a "Duchess!"

In my eyes, this white cat is nothing short of good luck. I had a black cat when I was a kid, and he had quite the grounding effect on me. I think we need differing colours at differnent times in our lives. Every colour under the rainbow can tell an interesting story.

I am partial to black cats. White cats seem dumb in comparison. Interesting photo, very animated. Do you have any black cat photos? Black cats are very intelligent.

George said...

Duchess is a completely appropriate name for that cat. Thanks for all the information on white cat myths.

Indrani said...

I have to be more cautious, plenty of myths hard to ignore. :)
Lovely shot!

Cats are the most adorable animal subjects in photography, IMO. You'd think they know how to pose, and that's what my photography teacher told me.

Back in the Philippines, were strays are a common sight I have lots of them. Now, I only get the chance to photograph a cat from hubby's aunt's place...

Yes, everybody, everybody wants to be a cat! (My kids singing!)

Jedediah said...

What a beautiful cat. The myths about whte cats are interesting. I racked my brain and I couldn't think of a single one. I just know that they are often deaf, a genetic defect.

Abraham Lincoln said...

Almost all of those reminds me of those sayings about black cats.

Oh wow... that really is a beautiful cat. To come to think about... I have rarely seen a pure white cat for many years... they have always had some sort of markings on them...

Wow ! so many tales about my white Arthur ! I can tell you he makes us laugh and the whole neighborhood too. I say good morning to him every morning but sometimes the day is not so good !
White cats with blue eyes are deaf to 99 %. If they have one blue and one yelllow eye it's OK. My Arthur has good yellow eyes and when I open a can he hears it over miles, lol !
Your cat picture is so cute, Arthur would probably love if it is a Miss !

I do have to talk to Magpies if I see them...lol
Not cat's though what ever colour they are...Although I don't like a black one to cross the road when I am driving.. :-)
I did a post about the Magpie and superstitions...those birds fasinate me....

Cute cat whatever the myth chosen.

Jilly said...

There seems to be a variety of myths and some conflicting. It was ever thus. Love the cat.

Boise Diva said...

When a cat chooses you, that's quite an honor. They sense something about good people. My kitties love some new visitors to the house instantly. And amazingingly, they know which ones don't deserve their attention.

Great post! i am interested in anything about cats.I have, however a thin booklet containing a story from Wales. It's called "The White Cat of Betws-y- Coed". This cat was not friendly at all. She proved to be a girl, who changed into a white cat at night, who attacked the narrator of the book. The number of the book isISBN86005 072 6. The story is set in Conway Castle.
