Rain, rain go away.Skywatch
Stormy weather heading my way. Sort of. No two days have been alike this week. From warm blue sky days, whipping winds, threatening foreboding clouds, hailstones we've had it all. Well no that's not true we haven't had a rainbow. Anyway rain, rain go away I need to put my washing out. Do you know this nursery rhyme? I always think of it on days like these, but not of it's origins. No it's not from the island, but I'm sure someone out there in Isle of Man world has a weird Manx or Gaelic version full of goblins, fairies, vampires and witches scaring children out of their wits as most nursery rhymes( and fairytales come to that) so often do. I mean whoever thought fairytales like Rumpelstiltskin and Hansel and Gretal were ideal bedtime reading? Is it any wonder lights are asked to be kept on! Don't even get me started on why clowns are scary. Back to the ditty. This apparently is the original version. Although there are many more.
- Rain rain go away,
- Come again another day.
- Little Brian wants to play;
- Rain, rain, go to Spain,
- Never show your face again!
Why Spain? Read what Wiki says and it's something I've heard before, but you know what myths are like. So Wiki Says
"Rain Rain Go Away" is a short children's rhyme. As with many nursey rhymes the origin and meaning of this rhyme is open for debate, but one theory dates it back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth the I. The invasion of the Spanish Armada was, in part, defeated by the stormy weather (which scattered the Armada fleet). A song, based on the rhyme, was co-written by Gloria Shayne Baker and Noel Regney, who were married at the time. Baker wrote the lyrics to the song, while Regney composed the music. Rain Rain Go Away was initially recorded by Bobby Vinton.

Still no Watchmen here!
You tell 'em Babooshka! Those kind of comments are out of place here, as you say this is photography for fun and I think everyone has lovely photos!!! And this one of yours is fantastic! I love the drama of the black and white! Always a pleasure to visit you here! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteInteresting history on the rhyme. I'd never heard that before.
ReplyDeleteI like the black and white sky with the angry clouds.
What a stunning image.
ReplyDeleteDo you mean people are criticising you on someone else's blog(s)? I can't believe that - it's one thing saying stuff on your blog, but on someone else's? Sheesh.
Am away for a few days, have a good Easter and don't eat too much chocolate :)
Wow! Impressive, scary and gorgeous at the same time. Don't want to be in that storm.
ReplyDeleteHi Jackie - Comments I have made on certain blogs who I have a rapport with and lots of fun have just been taken out of context.Very prickly negative comments aimed at me. Actually I agree with Abe, that it's just blog and photography envy, but to me it's bang out of order, rude and cowardly.
ReplyDeleteI love your black and white photo, just perfect for showing off the gorgeous clouds. I had never heard the part of the rhyme about Spain. Interesting info you found. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Babs - we got a rainbow at 4.pm this arvo. Weird one it was very long and flat - don't think I've ever seen one like it before. You know the double take 'that's weird' moment...
ReplyDeletealways something new to see for those who care to look.
Cheers
D
I guess I was too busy this week to come upon the negative blogger(s). Good thing as I would feel just as disgusted as you.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, back to the fun part of blogging...the pictures and the interesting information. Thanks for explaining the old rhyme. It amazes me that you know these things! As for the B&W, it's GREAT!
THere's no rant, like a good B. rant I always say. You go girl!! You keep us all straight.
ReplyDeleteNow about this fine photo. OHhhhh I love those clouds a whole lot and I like the photo being just about them
with a hint of hills at the bottom. I need to make a note of that one. April showers are upon us.
V
PS. Notice I didn't mention the "clown" thing. Ooppss, I just did! sorry.
Yes, come again another day; love folklore. Your monochrome, slightly spooky picture suits it. I have once posted the story behind ring a ring a rosy. There seems to be something much more sinister behind this simple childrens rhyme. Happy Easter Babooshka and do not let the Easter bunny get the better of you!
ReplyDeleteYour stormy sky is awesome. I get tired of rain too when there's too much of it, but love to take pictures of storm clouds when I can. They can look so angry at times.
ReplyDeleteSeems to be a lot of storminess in skywatch this week. I can't seem to get enough of them though. Love those angry clouds.
ReplyDeleteWow do I ever love this photo, perfect in black and white. Hope you had an umbrella.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend

#wow! it looks like volcano eruption to me!!! If the rain donet show again then there wont be such clouds lol! Happy SWF!
ReplyDeletePhenomenal! You'd think its just a reach away....Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing with us all in sky watch friday and thanks for your kind comments on my post earlier. That is a powerful looking view of the sky.
ReplyDeleteAwesome photo B. Tell 'em to go take a hike under those scary clouds.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a heck of a rain coming. Great pictures. Sorry somebody is talking trash about you. I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a heck of a rain coming. Great pictures. Sorry somebody is talking trash about you. I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteI know the rhyme. Didn't stop tothink it might have a hidden meaning.Bit slow sometimes. Oh jeez I just can't be bothered with people that don't have a sense of humour. Don't waste your time and energy on them. They'll disappear in a cloud of bad dust somewhere. But and however i do love those sotrmy clouds. Well ok they might bring a bit of rain but they shore is pretty beforehand.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Easter. Off to see a bit more of this isle meself. how about you?
I haven't come across any such comments but I agree that it's bang out of order. You have a great sense of humour and you are not afraid to express it. I think that is just a wonderful feature in someone. It's sad if envy makes people bitter and twisted instead of enjoying the whole variety that's on offer. Let's celebrate the fact that we have our blogs that all look like their keepers and that makes for a rich colour pallet in the blog world.
ReplyDeletePerhaps your photo is grey but it's so full of drama. I really like it.
As awesome those clouds are rain rain go away!!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than a good storm cloud, cause the air is always clean and fresh afterwards. Nice one.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo, one thing for sure in April, there never seems to be two days that are the same.
ReplyDeleteGill in Canada
Hm, I don't want to be under that sky, but I love it from my sofa. I'll try your re-phrased nursery rhyme next time I've got some washing - it always seems to rain just then.
ReplyDeleteQueen B you make me laff. Stuff the naysayers they aren't worth a bag of doritos. One MF scary sky.
ReplyDeleteOh no! You're not getting hassle again are you?
ReplyDeleteAs you say, they should lighten up. Get a life.
Great shot. I think the B&W makes it.
Eerie and somewhat frightening. Great shot!
ReplyDeleteBlowing raspberries! Only you could do that and show a black and white skywatch when all others are colour. Crazy talented girl.
ReplyDeleteMissing you on Facebook!
Looks almost as though the clouds are covering up the entire place.
ReplyDeleteA little scary but looks beautiful :)
Looks like a natural b&w and the sky is in a bad mood - probably wants to rain all over the nay sayer! Thanks for your comment on my sky watch. I have tried to stitch a few together into a panorama, but they didn't weren't very good. For a fantastic sky panorama at the top of the world see Roddy MacKenzie's image.
ReplyDeleteThat's an ominous sky and as always a great shot. Your posts are also always interesting. I hope you get some sunshine soon. I know after a while rain can get old when there aren't breaks.
ReplyDeleteThat cloudage is just stupendous! Love it.
ReplyDeleteVERY dramatic cloud shot! Sorry you mood is cloudy, too. You do beautiful photos, and I always learn something in the bargain. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteVery dramatic sky. Love it.
ReplyDeleteThat was one hum dinger of a rain cloud, to be sure. I love your world.
ReplyDeleteI love the stormy sky..you captured it beautifully. : )
ReplyDeleteI love those great big old clouds! Hope you have a wonderful Easter!
ReplyDeleteNice stormy sky, works well in B&W.
ReplyDeleteI remember singing that song, but only the first two lines.
Isn't blogging suppose to be fun. F*%k the folks that don't get that.
Fierce looking black and white sky!
ReplyDeleteLooked like a bad storm is coming. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteGreat post and wonderful capture on the storm clouds. Hope it drys up soon. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSmiles
Ahhh, your photo is so nice in b&w. It looks like your clouds are boiling over the land!
ReplyDeleteI had only heard the first two lines of the rain rhyme. Thank you for some history on it!
A Fabulous, brooding, growling image but I hope you find your rainbow and forget those idiots.
ReplyDeleteOnwards and upwards, Babooshka!
PS. I believe that when the rain arrives in Spain, it falls mainly on the plain.
Sorry if you've had some negative posts. From what we see, people love you! Great clouds. White and brilliant and ready to blow on out at any minute.
ReplyDeleteThe strength in this photo is monumental.
ReplyDeleteYou tell 'em girl! I had one recently, who then went on to attack me very personally on his own blog. Really peed me off but I rose above it, deleted his comment and pointed out my copyright!
ReplyDeleteOn to the piccie, it's stunning! As Lynette said above, so powerful and more so for the b&w I suspect.
Goodness that is one mean looking sky, did you have lots of rain? We too had rain today. I guess its better than snow.
ReplyDeleteIt must be a cloud kind of sky watch. Clouds here were magnificant too. It does seem most Nursery rhymes were political to start with and told in childish sing song words because there was no freedom of speech. As the Queen said "Off with their heads"!!!LOL.We also sang---and I don't know what it means---
ReplyDeleteIt's raining
It's pouring
The old man is snoring
He bumped his head
and wet the bed
and couldn't get up in the morning.
Take care--MB
They look majestic and threatening !
ReplyDeleteso dramatic sky!!!
ReplyDeleteThe rain is supposed to come this way early next week, but I hope it clears up during the latter part---Orthodox Easter is the 19th, and it just HAS to be sunny.
ReplyDeleteYour forboding sky is dramatic!
I only knew the first two lines of that little poem! Thank you for teaching me something new : ).
ReplyDeleteIt won't go away for a few more weeks because it's April, remember? April Showers bring May flowers!
Happy Easter to you!
l'enfer est descendu sur terre, magnifique ce b&w et très bon choix.
ReplyDeletehell descended on earth, this beautiful b&w and very good choice.
I love this photograph you have shown today its full of power and drama unfolding. All the more powerful for being in B+W.
ReplyDeleteI had not known the rhyme reference to Spain, may be it has happened, they have very mixed weather now days.
We may have crossed paths, so to speak. I used to live at Lytham St Anns years ago and recall the sand dunes.
Have a great week.

ReplyDeletebeautiful photo and have a nice weekend ;)
ReplyDeleteWe have sun at the moment, but expect rain later.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter.
Love your billowing storm clouds! They look quite ferocious in monochrome!
ReplyDeleteSounds normal for the Island. We have had two days, not consectutive,of very heavy rain.
ReplyDeleteHow Dramatic! And even if we like the rain to go away, it often makes gorgeous pictures :)
ReplyDeletevery beautiful clouds and interesting post too. thanks.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite objects to shoot, storms. Nice catch.
ReplyDeleteVery ominous looking clouds!
ReplyDeleteGo away, negative people!
A necessary evil, rain ... now if it would just dump its load OVER a reservoir ... Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteGreat captured, Babooshka!
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter.
Great dynamism in your clouds.
ReplyDeleteThat's my favorite rhyme when it rains and i need to go somewhere. :)
ReplyDeleteNice sky shot! Very dramatic.
I actually like the black and white--makes it moodier I think. Your photography is always stunning, Babooshka!
ReplyDeleteThat's a terribly scary sky ! Looks like if heaven falls on my head in a second !
ReplyDeleteIn German we say : April, April does what it wants (will) . (it's a rhyme) for the moment we have beautiful weather but tomorrow it's raining again !
I think we are in the same boat !
Way you go girl...Give them stick....Can't abide rudeness myself and how can anybody in their right mind be rude or criticise you.....You take awesome photos and at the same time give help and tips to others like myself who are only just learning. Yes the weather has been a rather mixed bag this week. Now late afternoon Good Friday sun is shining at long last. .....OOPS...nearly forgot....Cracking clouds image...Storm approaching very ominous. Very Manx. Excellent capture.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience people who don't have the courage of their convictions to criticise to someone's face so to speak are simply jealous, cowardly or both. The world is unfortunately full of petty people like that, but you are very fortunate to have lots of good people visit your site B.
ReplyDeleteNice moody pic btw. 80)
As always wonderful info!
ReplyDeleteI love this shot - black and white makes it as dramatic as it is - lovely!
Nothing wrong with the black and white, it looks more dramatic, sometimes rainy clouds do look as in the grey scale anyway. Anna :)
ReplyDeleteWho dares to insult my favourite Manx lass? Whoever it is I'll go and punch his/her lights out!
ReplyDeleteMind you, I'm sure you can hold your own, either with or without a few pints inside you.
Great photo (as ever) by the way. I was hoping it was going to be a good weekend, but the sky over Nottingham looks just the same. I guess I'll just have to spend the next few days scoffing chocolate.
Great photo, I can just feel that storm coming!
ReplyDeleteTypical Bank Holiday skies, grey and stormy. Nice though.
ReplyDeleteTypical Bank Holiday skies, grey and stormy. Nice though.
ReplyDeleteTypical Bank Holiday skies, grey and stormy. Nice though.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the rain... after all the cold and snow we have been having, the rain is nice because that means warmer temperatures and the flowers and trees will start to grow!
ReplyDeleteA great stormy photo!
Wow very fierce clouds! The monochrome effect makes them even more dramatic.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I love most about Sky Watch Friday is the unique individual creativity I see when visiting others blogs.
ReplyDeleteIf everyone followed a speciic protocol and all the photos ended up being so very similar, I'd quit participating, because Sky Watch would be boring.
I am in awe of your black and white skywatch photo. It is full of drama and emotions and raw beauty.
You did good.
:)

Storm clouds are exciting - rain clouds usualy just dull.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you tie in some interesting 'trivia' to your posts.
That is a really beautiful shot. It looks amazing in black and white.
ReplyDeleteIt was like a prelude to a battle or something. Full of anger. Maybe.
ReplyDeleteLove all the drama in this b&w beauty, Baboosh! Great stuff for SWF too.
ReplyDeleteAmazing sky , i love it :)
ReplyDeleteOutstanding monochrome full of drama.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing, the rhyme in particular.
ReplyDeleteNo, No, No, don't send the rain to Spain, but send it to Australia where ie is dry and has bush fires.
ReplyDeleteEliza doolittle may sing, the rain in Spain fall int the plain, but it is Austalia that needs the rain.
This rain rhyme was one of three children's rhyme I learnt when I was a kid in Borneo. We sang it as little Johnny wants to play.
Angry clouds, my husband always uses this term angry. I wonder why he says that. In Borneo, in the mid afternoon, if the clouds are black, we better take the laundry in. If not, the dark clouds will send down the rain in buckets.
Lovely B&W shot of the threatening clouds, and thanks for the interesting write up.
ReplyDeletesuperb capture!
ReplyDeleteIt is a scary sky.
ReplyDeletePowerful photo.
ReplyDeleteI was moved.
We shall be over for the TT, God willing. Happy Easter.
ReplyDeleteThat is if we can afford too he he!
ReplyDeleteblogging is very tiring unpaid work, no matter how much fun it is
ReplyDeletestormy weather heading our way too - i;ve heard half a dozen loud thunder claps so far tonight
Hi 5 B,
ReplyDeleteBabooska, those clouds are PERFECT in black and white. I understand the mood. I never knew any of this info about that rhyme, but I use to recite it often as a child, though I didn't know the final lines about blowing back to Spain.
ReplyDeleteHi 5 B,
ReplyDeleteHo Ho..comment 101, my lucky number..Clown are very scary as are thunderstorms and yogurt beyond the use-by date...very scary stuff...Michelle
ReplyDeleteI like the stormy clouds and I like your photo. The rhyme I've never heard earlier. The history of it is interesting.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the stormy clouds are gathering above our heads...
Thank you for visiting my blog
The picture is really very dramatic. About the negative comments I think that some people use the internet for hiding their bad habbits behind a screenname...
ReplyDeleteAh so dramatic sky and very good in B&W, it's so expressive. Thanks for the visit on my SWF.
