STORM CLOUDS - SKYWATCH

Rain, rain go away.

Skywatch

Stormy weather heading my way. Sort of. No two days have been alike this week. From warm blue sky days, whipping winds, threatening foreboding clouds, hailstones we've had it all. Well no that's not true we haven't had a rainbow. Anyway rain, rain go away I need to put my washing out. Do you know this nursery rhyme? I always think of it on days like these, but not of it's origins. No it's not from the island, but I'm sure someone out there in Isle of Man world has a weird Manx or Gaelic version full of goblins, fairies, vampires and witches scaring children out of their wits as most nursery rhymes( and fairytales come to that) so often do. I mean whoever thought fairytales like Rumpelstiltskin and Hansel and Gretal were ideal bedtime reading? Is it any wonder lights are asked to be kept on! Don't even get me started on why clowns are scary. Back to the ditty. This apparently is the original version. Although there are many more.

Rain rain go away,
Come again another day.
Little Brian wants to play;
Rain, rain, go to Spain,
Never show your face again!

Why Spain? Read what Wiki says and it's something I've heard before, but you know what myths are like. So Wiki Says

"Rain Rain Go Away" is a short children's rhyme. As with many nursey rhymes the origin and meaning of this rhyme is open for debate, but one theory dates it back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth the I. The invasion of the Spanish Armada was, in part, defeated by the stormy weather (which scattered the Armada fleet). A song, based on the rhyme, was co-written by Gloria Shayne Baker and Noel Regney, who were married at the time. Baker wrote the lyrics to the song, while Regney composed the music. Rain Rain Go Away was initially recorded by Bobby Vinton.

I know I usually go for colour skywatch but this tumultuous thunderous storm brewing sky suits my mood this week. I always said I'll blog while it's fun and stop when it's not. Well some people need to lighten up and remember this is not a competition, this blogging lark and that commenting about another person negatively on someone else's blog is just the height of bad manners blogging etiquette. You see why I have not been around for a few days, besides the work taking me out of town and out of net reach. I'm poking my tongue out at you verbally rude person(people). You nice people out there ignore the tongue poking and hopefully enjoy the stormy clouds. Thruuuuuuuuuuuup! That was a blown raspberry! Some people have noooooooooo sense of humour.

Skywatch watchers can be found here. Many thanks to Dot for the inspirational idea, Tom for the first care taking and the My world gang for looking after skywatch now.

Still no Watchmen here!

  1. You tell 'em Babooshka! Those kind of comments are out of place here, as you say this is photography for fun and I think everyone has lovely photos!!! And this one of yours is fantastic! I love the drama of the black and white! Always a pleasure to visit you here! Have a great weekend!

  2. Interesting history on the rhyme. I'd never heard that before.
I like the black and white sky with the angry clouds.

  3. What a stunning image.

Do you mean people are criticising you on someone else's blog(s)? I can't believe that - it's one thing saying stuff on your blog, but on someone else's? Sheesh.

Am away for a few days, have a good Easter and don't eat too much chocolate :)

  4. Wow! Impressive, scary and gorgeous at the same time. Don't want to be in that storm.

  5. Hi Jackie - Comments I have made on certain blogs who I have a rapport with and lots of fun have just been taken out of context.Very prickly negative comments aimed at me. Actually I agree with Abe, that it's just blog and photography envy, but to me it's bang out of order, rude and cowardly.

  6. I love your black and white photo, just perfect for showing off the gorgeous clouds. I had never heard the part of the rhyme about Spain. Interesting info you found. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Hi Babs - we got a rainbow at 4.pm this arvo. Weird one it was very long and flat - don't think I've ever seen one like it before. You know the double take 'that's weird' moment...
always something new to see for those who care to look.

    Cheers

  8. I guess I was too busy this week to come upon the negative blogger(s). Good thing as I would feel just as disgusted as you.

Meanwhile, back to the fun part of blogging...the pictures and the interesting information. Thanks for explaining the old rhyme. It amazes me that you know these things! As for the B&W, it's GREAT!

  9. THere's no rant, like a good B. rant I always say. You go girl!! You keep us all straight.

Now about this fine photo. OHhhhh I love those clouds a whole lot and I like the photo being just about them
with a hint of hills at the bottom. I need to make a note of that one. April showers are upon us.

PS. Notice I didn't mention the "clown" thing. Ooppss, I just did! sorry.

  10. Yes, come again another day; love folklore. Your monochrome, slightly spooky picture suits it. I have once posted the story behind ring a ring a rosy. There seems to be something much more sinister behind this simple childrens rhyme. Happy Easter Babooshka and do not let the Easter bunny get the better of you!

  11. Your stormy sky is awesome. I get tired of rain too when there's too much of it, but love to take pictures of storm clouds when I can. They can look so angry at times.

  12. Seems to be a lot of storminess in skywatch this week. I can't seem to get enough of them though. Love those angry clouds.

  20. I know the rhyme. Didn't stop tothink it might have a hidden meaning.Bit slow sometimes. Oh jeez I just can't be bothered with people that don't have a sense of humour. Don't waste your time and energy on them. They'll disappear in a cloud of bad dust somewhere. But and however i do love those sotrmy clouds. Well ok they might bring a bit of rain but they shore is pretty beforehand.
Have a great Easter. Off to see a bit more of this isle meself. how about you?

  21. I haven't come across any such comments but I agree that it's bang out of order. You have a great sense of humour and you are not afraid to express it. I think that is just a wonderful feature in someone. It's sad if envy makes people bitter and twisted instead of enjoying the whole variety that's on offer. Let's celebrate the fact that we have our blogs that all look like their keepers and that makes for a rich colour pallet in the blog world.
Perhaps your photo is grey but it's so full of drama. I really like it.

  25. Hm, I don't want to be under that sky, but I love it from my sofa. I'll try your re-phrased nursery rhyme next time I've got some washing - it always seems to rain just then.

  26. Queen B you make me laff. Stuff the naysayers they aren't worth a bag of doritos. One MF scary sky.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh no! You're not getting hassle again are you?
As you say, they should lighten up. Get a life.

Great shot. I think the B&W makes it.

  28. Eerie and somewhat frightening. Great shot!

  29. Blowing raspberries! Only you could do that and show a black and white skywatch when all others are colour. Crazy talented girl.

  30. Looks almost as though the clouds are covering up the entire place.
A little scary but looks beautiful :)

  31. Looks like a natural b&w and the sky is in a bad mood - probably wants to rain all over the nay sayer! Thanks for your comment on my sky watch. I have tried to stitch a few together into a panorama, but they didn't weren't very good. For a fantastic sky panorama at the top of the world see Roddy MacKenzie's image.

  43. A Fabulous, brooding, growling image but I hope you find your rainbow and forget those idiots.

    Onwards and upwards, Babooshka!

PS. I believe that when the rain arrives in Spain, it falls mainly on the plain.

  44. Sorry if you've had some negative posts. From what we see, people love you! Great clouds. White and brilliant and ready to blow on out at any minute.

  46. You tell 'em girl! I had one recently, who then went on to attack me very personally on his own blog. Really peed me off but I rose above it, deleted his comment and pointed out my copyright!

On to the piccie, it's stunning! As Lynette said above, so powerful and more so for the b&w I suspect.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Goodness that is one mean looking sky, did you have lots of rain? We too had rain today. I guess its better than snow.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It must be a cloud kind of sky watch. Clouds here were magnificant too. It does seem most Nursery rhymes were political to start with and told in childish sing song words because there was no freedom of speech. As the Queen said "Off with their heads"!!!LOL.We also sang---and I don't know what it means---
    It's raining
    It's pouring
    The old man is snoring
    He bumped his head
    and wet the bed
and couldn't get up in the morning.

    Take care--MB

  51. The rain is supposed to come this way early next week, but I hope it clears up during the latter part---Orthodox Easter is the 19th, and it just HAS to be sunny.

    Your forboding sky is dramatic!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I only knew the first two lines of that little poem! Thank you for teaching me something new : ).

It won't go away for a few more weeks because it's April, remember? April Showers bring May flowers!

    Happy Easter to you!

  54. I love this photograph you have shown today its full of power and drama unfolding. All the more powerful for being in B+W.
I had not known the rhyme reference to Spain, may be it has happened, they have very mixed weather now days.
We may have crossed paths, so to speak. I used to live at Lytham St Anns years ago and recall the sand dunes.
    Have a great week.

In German we say : April, April does what it wants (will) . (it's a rhyme) for the moment we have beautiful weather but tomorrow it's raining again !
I think we are in the same boat !

  70. Way you go girl...Give them stick....Can't abide rudeness myself and how can anybody in their right mind be rude or criticise you.....You take awesome photos and at the same time give help and tips to others like myself who are only just learning. Yes the weather has been a rather mixed bag this week. Now late afternoon Good Friday sun is shining at long last. .....OOPS...nearly forgot....Cracking clouds image...Storm approaching very ominous. Very Manx. Excellent capture.

  71. In my experience people who don't have the courage of their convictions to criticise to someone's face so to speak are simply jealous, cowardly or both. The world is unfortunately full of petty people like that, but you are very fortunate to have lots of good people visit your site B.

    Nice moody pic btw. 80)

  72. As always wonderful info!
I love this shot - black and white makes it as dramatic as it is - lovely!

  73. Nothing wrong with the black and white, it looks more dramatic, sometimes rainy clouds do look as in the grey scale anyway. Anna :)

  74. Who dares to insult my favourite Manx lass? Whoever it is I'll go and punch his/her lights out!

Mind you, I'm sure you can hold your own, either with or without a few pints inside you.

Great photo (as ever) by the way. I was hoping it was going to be a good weekend, but the sky over Nottingham looks just the same. I guess I'll just have to spend the next few days scoffing chocolate.

  81. The one thing I love most about Sky Watch Friday is the unique individual creativity I see when visiting others blogs.
If everyone followed a speciic protocol and all the photos ended up being so very similar, I'd quit participating, because Sky Watch would be boring.

I am in awe of your black and white skywatch photo. It is full of drama and emotions and raw beauty.

    You did good.

  88. No, No, No, don't send the rain to Spain, but send it to Australia where ie is dry and has bush fires.

Eliza doolittle may sing, the rain in Spain fall int the plain, but it is Austalia that needs the rain.

This rain rhyme was one of three children's rhyme I learnt when I was a kid in Borneo. We sang it as little Johnny wants to play.

Angry clouds, my husband always uses this term angry. I wonder why he says that. In Borneo, in the mid afternoon, if the clouds are black, we better take the laundry in. If not, the dark clouds will send down the rain in buckets.
