MOTHERING SUNDAY OR MOTHER'S DAY? - CRITTERS

Today is Mothering Sunday in the UK although I have always known it as Mother's Day which I 've since discovered is another celebratory day, different day same idea US. I'm still weighed down and housebound with the horrible virus so an archive Mother and babies image blackbirds, from my very own garden and a little info on Mothering Sunday, which yes we do celebrate on the island too.


Mothering Sunday celebrated throughout Europe. A celebration of motherhood, and the equivalent of Mother's Day as celebrated in other countries mainly the USA where the name has actually been copyrighted.

Religious motherhood celebrations in Europe have been around in one form or another for many centuries going as far back as the Romans who worshipped mother goddess Cybele sometime during march. This Pagan festival was soon replaced by Christian Mothering Sunday as the Romans caught the Christianity bug, celebrations usually the fourth Sunday in lent known as Laetare Sunday too. Gathering at their Mother(main) Church on Sundays was often the only time whole families could actually get together. "Gone Mothering" or "Gone-a- Mothering" came into use and may account for the term Mothering Sunday becoming the adopted name for the day we now celebrate. In subsequent years the name became associated with a servants and day off when they commonally went to visit their mother's and the term Mothering Sunday became especially associated with the UK, but not to the exclusion of other countries. Rose Sunday, Ladies Day, Women's Day are also related names. Does your country have any of these?

    We celebrate Mother's Day here in Canada as well, the North American version is observed on the second Sunday in May - May 10th this year. We also have Father's Day, which is celebrated the 3rd Sunday in June - June 21st this year. Sorry to hear you're still poorly. I can empatize, I've had one bug after another since Valentine's Day. Sick of being sick, damn it!! Hope you feel better real soon.

    Nice photo of mama and her babies.

    I didn't know the idea of Mother's Day goes so far back in history! I was under the impression it was some North American marketing scheme. ;-)

    Lots of ads here at present suggesting to take mother for afternoon tea. Why pubs for fathers day and tea for mothers? Very sweet mother bird

    I'm with Your EG Tour Guide. I always thought it was a marketing scheme. Many years ago I did a stint as a telephone operator. Mother's Day was the busiest day of the year, even surpassing Christmas.

    We've taken to celebrating Mother's Day the same day as in the US because we were also their colony for quite a few decades.

    Very interesting post dear Babooshka. I didn’t know at all this “Mothering Day”. Here, in Turkey, we celebrate Mothers’ Day on the second Sunday of May. We also celebrate Women’s Day on March 8th.

    The photo is striking...a photo like that is so hard to get...we've had a couple of nests (sparrows, I think) in a thingy on our deck, but I have yet to get a decent photo of the young-un's much less Mama and young-uns!

    I love your posts. Very informative always.

    My mother always says: Mother's Day is commercial nonsense. We don't do Mother's Day.
    So every year, when we ignore Mother's Day, she's mad at us, because she expected us to visit her. I mean, how unfair is that?

    i think we celebrated mothers day in may in nz - i dont know when it is in greece, even though i am a mother, and i should be pampered on that day!

    Fabulous shots of those birds. Well taken. Great insight into the beginnings of Mothering Sunday too. I thought it got hijacked too by the churches in honour of the mother of Jesus but I might be wrong.

    What a lovely mother bird. I am in NZ; my mother is in England - NZ has Mothers' Day in May (a la America). Mum always sends me an English calendar for Christmas - I think it's so I can remember to send a card or make a phone call on Mothering Sunday. Mums are sneaky like that.
