MISTAKEN GHOSTS-MONOCHROME ODD SHOTS

Ghosts

Monochrome Odd Shots

If you are here for Glass Theme Day it's the post below as today is another image. This is an archive. In fact this is one that should have been deleted ages ago and I've no idea what it's still doing hanging around vitrually. It wasn't until I stumbled across it I thought it would make a great odd shot and serve as a lesson though. Original version is colour shot in Raw. The only alteration has been to desaturate, strip the colour in Raw it's self. This left the really ghostly image you see. I know it looks like a studio image with a white canvas backdrop and overly lit but it's actually along Mooragh Promenade watching the stunt bikes. The white mist isn't ghostly ectoplasm at all but fumes from the motorbike that had just passed by. I know it looks like I'm right in front of them too but I was actually quite far away using the zoom at full pelt. The shiny black lump of plastic on the right is a bin of all things. As this image is a mistake no need to clone bins out of shot. Of the four images I took of this scene this one came out as a ghastly overexposed mistake or is it a ghostly haunting image? Depends on your point of view. One thing I will say is the girl with the white coat is far more striking as an image in this photo than the others. It is definitely a mistake to me and of absolutely no use other than here, or maybe experiment with, but sometimes they make the most interesting images. One things for sure it's odd and ghostly.

Have you made any use of your mistakes? I do find they are useful as a lesson in what not to do.

Click Katney for your odd shot quirks. Click Aileni for your monochrome maniacs. That's it off to re classify the images

  1. Very neat with your explanation or explication. And, yes, I have made use of some not so good photos.

  2. For some reason the girl in white just doesn't seem to fit in the picture, so she does give a kinda ghostly appearence to it. LOL I don't think its that bad of a pictute myself.

  3. Actually I've used two very similar mistakes on my blog. Most recently in Kay's Mini-meme based on the seven deadly sins. Before that there was a Thursday Challenge in which I used another shot from the same day/time. I was radically overexposed -- probably 3 1/2 stops or more -- and while the image was a "mistake" I actually liked the effect. It resembled a Photoshop filter (Find Edges) some people seem to favor a lot and I had to make the disclaimer that the image was completely unaltered.

I've since repeated the same mistake, though not on as grand a scale and found that even though it was "wrong", for the subject in question it actually worked quite well.

I prefer to call these "accidents" rather than "mistakes" since there's usually some value in them... even if they're technically imperfect.

  4. I like the ghostly effect. It makes everyone in the back look in control and those in the front look lost. As if there are a few survivors and the rest are doomed. OK my imagination got the better of me. Interesting shot though.

  5. It really creeps me out. That girl clinging onto her coat is the one. I wouldn't call a mistake though.

  7. I was so scared when I saw that image that I ran to the next blog. After I calmed down I realized it wasn't REALLY a ghost I was seeing, so I came back to comment.

Love this shot! Don't get rid of it.

I post my mistakes on a cute little blog I'm a member of. It helps to know I'm not alone in the mistake category, lol.

  8. You're right, Baboosh, it is the girl in the white coat that makes the image work or "pop". Love it, odd or not.

  10. there is something about this that is very pleasing to my eye.
I am of the belief that the best opportunities are born out of my mistakes.

  15. idée originale, nous montrer l'autre coté. Cela rend très bien en b&w avec la poussière.

original idea, we show the other side. This makes it very well in b & w with dust.

  17. I've posted the odd photo that hasn't gone right, and have been amazed that visitors have left messages saying that they like it, just like some of your have.

I guess there's no such thing these days as a bad shot, as you can always do something with it.

  18. Why I don't miss three people in the upper line?
    Great shot!

  19. A mistake for an odd Monochrome success. I prefer to watch this gostly pictures than what spectators are looking at, Babooshka.

  20. Fumes, ugh! At first I thought it was the poor non-smokers looking out over the smoking section of some outdoor restaurant...!

  21. Ooops. Forgot to say that I do use my photo mistakes. One is coming up in a couple of days, and I mention that its 'success' was due to a mistake!

  24. You can't make too many mistakes these days with digital cameras and exposure as they are good. But back in the days of film you can make a good few whoopers. Now they would be interesting to see.

  25. Wonderful lesson from this mistake! Odd and ghostly is right! ;)

  26. Maybe she looks so striking because of her dark hair, and in combination with her white coat.... I like this photo!

Mistakes my dear? I never make them! LOL
Truthfully: I only use the photos that accidentally came out right. As I have no idea what I'm doing with my little cheap Samsung digimax I5. Sheer luck makes some shots actually look quite decent.

  30. Very interesting... I usually enjoy turning botched shots into something useful. I don't know what I'd do without Photoshop ;-)

  31. Interesting .. me? I would have deleted it ...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't think it is spooky or ghostly, jusy B&W. I am not too photo savvy so I generally would delete what I didn't like and try not to do it again. MB

  33. Nice explanation and yes I have also "arranged" bad pictures into modern art, lol !

  34. On purpose or not, it is a very interesting image and with the wide meaning of the word art could be just what someone is looking for.

  35. I hope to understand the "shot talk" one day when I own a real camera. Meanwhile, I really like that shot. It was interesting to learn to details of what the real shot was as apposed to what one might assume by looking at it.

  36. I don't see why you call it a mistake! It's good! it makes one wonder what's going on. Who are these people, what causes the smoke. What are they looking at. You told it, so we know the answers. Believe me: it's intriguing!

  37. Mistakes? Someday I will delete my mistakes--when I get through using them.

  38. That shot must be the most well done mistake I have ever seen :) Soooo cooool :)

  46. That picture has grown on me. The more I look at it the more I like it. You could almost have meant it as a moody portrait of that white-coated girl!
