Working boats
As you can see we have very different weather here to most bloggers. It's either been rain, fog or an unnaturally still aura about the place. The one thing we haven't had is snow. Just as well really for the boats above moored by the harbour side wall I'm referring too, that's a real life working boat. There is also another behind out of view. I don't usually see the boats here in the day they are usually out at sea.
Not being a fisherman myself (or woman) by either trade or hobby I couldn't tell you what type of fish they would be fishing for, quantity, quality etc. All I know is the boats go out and then they return laden or not with goodies, Manx kippers of course and scallops. Well for now anyway. The Scallop Industry on the island is going through a credit crunch which you can read about here that may scupper scallop fishing in the future. So those boats may be at rest a lot longer than the short time I had to take their image.

I couldn't tell you. I'm a veggie but Gary's not. Well he is from Fleetwood and they used to have even more fisherman than the island. What occupation is suffering due to the credit crunch in your area.

Cracking photo Babooshka, love the new angle from the bridge. Not often you see them moored along this wall though they do keep old nets etc on the quayside in that area. Boats look familiar and if Im not mistaken will be scallop dredgers. That's the norm out of Ramsey anyway. They scrape / dredge up the scallop shells bring them to the surface then put them through that rotating drum effort that is found on these vessels for sorting. Both kippers and Queenies I love.......Hope you and Gary have a good Christmas and an even better New Year.....
ReplyDeleteI can only apologise for cutting and pasting this comment, but there was no way on Earth I would be able to make it around the whole globe to wish everybody a Merry Christmas otherwise. I have only one pair of hands and the magical elves that I have working for me are a bunch of lazy good-for-nothings. All they do is sit around smoking, playing cards and throwing rocks at the reindeer!

In our area (southwestern Ontario, Canada) the industry that's making the financial hardship headlines more than most is the auto industry. Vehicles are built in and near this area by GM, Toyota and Honda to name a few. So they are all affected, as are a multitude of parts plants which supply them. North American car makers are still making waaaaaay too many vehicles which are waaaay too large.

Lovely shot Babooshka. Here it seems the auto industry, well and banks, to be the hardest hit. My husband is in the rv industry and they are plugging along. Things don't seem so bad to us, but then we really don't watch much news. Seems anyone can get depressed when you listen to the media, who always wants to tell us the sky is falling.

ReplyDeleteThat little lifeboat looks just a bit more modern than the ones on the box of Lifeboat Tea (Williamson Teas Limited) I purchase locally. My favorite, by the way. 4 pence from the sale of each box is paid in support of the RNLI charity and helps fund little boats like yours.

ReplyDeleteI could have spared the world my not very good illustrations but I am determined to finsh the theme now. And ABC - it could go the same way a SW. Smaller 'memes' are more my style.

ReplyDeleteweather here has been really nice this morning - blue sky and sun - I needed my anorak and hood but not scarf - never cared for kippers myself.
ReplyDeleteI so wish we could have some of your weather right now. It is cold and we are in the middle of yet another snow storm. We've had more snow in this month alone, than we usually get during an entire winter.

That's a lovely picture. It reminds me of Harris (where I was on honeymoon at the beginning of this year) - there was a couple of small fishing boats like these moored near where we were staying.
