W - IS FOR WORKING BOATS

 Ramsey Harbour

Working boats

As you can see we have very different weather here to most bloggers. It's either been rain, fog or an unnaturally still aura about the place. The one thing we haven't had is snow. Just as well really for the boats above moored by the harbour side wall I'm referring too, that's a real life working boat. There is also another behind out of view.  I don't usually see the boats here in the day they are usually out at sea.

Not being a fisherman myself (or woman) by either trade or hobby I couldn't tell you what type of fish they would be fishing for, quantity, quality etc. All I know is the boats go out and then they return laden or not with goodies,  Manx kippers of course and scallops. Well for now anyway. The Scallop Industry on the island is going through a credit crunch which you can read about here that may scupper scallop fishing in the future. So those boats may be at rest a lot longer than the short time I had to take their image.

In case you are wandering what Manx kippers and Queenie scallops taste like well to be honest
I couldn't tell you. I'm a veggie but Gary's not. Well he is from Fleetwood and they used to have even more fisherman than the island. What occupation is suffering due to the credit crunch in your area.

The Barker christmas card will be posted tomorrow.

  1. Cracking photo Babooshka, love the new angle from the bridge. Not often you see them moored along this wall though they do keep old nets etc on the quayside in that area. Boats look familiar and if Im not mistaken will be scallop dredgers. That's the norm out of Ramsey anyway. They scrape / dredge up the scallop shells bring them to the surface then put them through that rotating drum effort that is found on these vessels for sorting. Both kippers and Queenies I love.......Hope you and Gary have a good Christmas and an even better New Year.....

  2. I can only apologise for cutting and pasting this comment, but there was no way on Earth I would be able to make it around the whole globe to wish everybody a Merry Christmas otherwise. I have only one pair of hands and the magical elves that I have working for me are a bunch of lazy good-for-nothings. All they do is sit around smoking, playing cards and throwing rocks at the reindeer!

Anyway, from myself, Henry and Ezra, have a Merry Christmas/Winter Solstice/Hanukkah/Festivus and a happy New Year!

I hope that all of your holiday photos turn out to be triumphs, and may your stocking be stuffed full of lots of tasty treats and not coal!

  3. In our area (southwestern Ontario, Canada) the industry that's making the financial hardship headlines more than most is the auto industry. Vehicles are built in and near this area by GM, Toyota and Honda to name a few. So they are all affected, as are a multitude of parts plants which supply them. North American car makers are still making waaaaaay too many vehicles which are waaaay too large.

On a more positive note, Merry/Happy Christmas!

  4. The death of this industry would be a disaster for the island. Well done for highlighting this with a pretty photograph. First time visitor.

  5. Hi Babooshka, hope you have a lovely Christmas. Between the weather and Christmas shopping and snow shoveling, my blogging has suffered! Love your working boats...not a fan of some fish but I do like scallops!

  8. I'm glad your not one of those veggies that eat fish...and chicken...and waffer thin ham...anyway...I probably won't get back here before christmas so I wish you and Gary a very happy christmas. I really do hope things get better for Gary in 2009.

Many thanks to you for all your encouragement this year. At times I felt I had lost my way with this blogging thing. Now I just enjoy taking photos and not worrying about the rest of it!

    Warmest festive greetings
    Marley :)

  9. Thanks for the picture. I'm not sure how many of our scallops come from your area, but they've been hard to find lately. Home building is probably hardest hit around here -- we don't have much industry.

  14. This is gorgeous. Were the stairs already that perfect yellow or did you have to go out and paint them just to get such great color in this shot?

Around here it seems to be construction and tourism hardest hit -- so far.

  16. Lovely shot Babooshka. Here it seems the auto industry, well and banks, to be the hardest hit. My husband is in the rv industry and they are plugging along. Things don't seem so bad to us, but then we really don't watch much news. Seems anyone can get depressed when you listen to the media, who always wants to tell us the sky is falling.

    Merry Christmas!

  17. That little lifeboat looks just a bit more modern than the ones on the box of Lifeboat Tea (Williamson Teas Limited) I purchase locally. My favorite, by the way. 4 pence from the sale of each box is paid in support of the RNLI charity and helps fund little boats like yours.

  18. Actually when Wayne acts a fool I call him W for you know who! That straightens him right us usually.

  20. I lived amongst Working Boats of one sort or another - including our own.
I could have spared the world my not very good illustrations but I am determined to finsh the theme now. And ABC - it could go the same way a SW. Smaller 'memes' are more my style.

  29. Hello!
I have an award for you at my blog, just to say thanks for the beautiful and interesting pictures youùve been posting! I've always wanted to visit the Isle of Man but never got round to doing it, despite living in nearby Manchester for years. Maybe I'll get the opportunity now that I live in Belgium... You do not have to acknowledge or pass on the award if you don't want to.
    Cheers!

  30. Great shot; and a pity about the pending demise of the industry. Have a nice Christmas.

  32. I do hope business picks up for them soon. Yes, you do have different weather there, and it looks wonderful to me, rain or not. Right now our rain has turned to ice, which makes traveling rather hazardous.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, Babooshka!

  35. weather here has been really nice this morning - blue sky and sun - I needed my anorak and hood but not scarf - never cared for kippers myself.

  36. I so wish we could have some of your weather right now. It is cold and we are in the middle of yet another snow storm. We've had more snow in this month alone, than we usually get during an entire winter.

Anyway, really like the photo, especially with all the blues in it blue is my favorite color).

    Merry Christmas...

  38. I love the way the boat on the left looks with the tide out. Who knew!
    Happy Christmas!

  39. That's a lovely picture. It reminds me of Harris (where I was on honeymoon at the beginning of this year) - there was a couple of small fishing boats like these moored near where we were staying.

Wishing you and Gary a very happy Christmas - I hope 2009 brings him more luck on the job front.
