MONOCHROME ODDSHOTS - WHAT LIGHT THROUGH YONDER BRANCHES BREAK

Poyll Dooey

Tree trunk legs can slimmed down in monochrome?

What an I say you all know what it's all about by now. An image in black and white that is quirky.
So what's odd about this. For me there are many things that are slightly odd, weird, quirky, peculiar about this image from the twisted branches to the odd trunk but I'll go with the spot of light you see. If this was colour you would know whether that was sunlight, moonlight, a sun flare, a fill flash etc. Oddly when you strip the colour from the image there is no point of reference, no colour, light or shade poking through the leaves and branches. The ball of light could be anything now, any time of day.

So here's my question for you photography enthusiasts out there, what time of day do you think this is. Just for fun of course, lighten up people I want this to be educational as you request, but please don't get in a flap.

Well you all know the problems I'm having and now I really am struggling. Only half the images to hand, and have to borrow Gary's laptop and upload one image only. So no at the moment no new images can be taken and it's getting to be a real headache as I cannot post at my leisure and choose an image and text in tandem already written. You could be getting some very bizarre images turn on the blog like my other tree odd shot click here

  1. I think this is a trick question. Given that there is a light that is possibly a street light my immediate reaction is that it is the evening. However often street lights go on early and off late. So I am going to guess that it is actually quite early in the morning.

  2. Fun photo and question, since I have no idea where your tree is located, N,S,E,W, I'll guess 6 AM, sunrise.

  3. I'm going to guess late night, it is a street lamp, and you just left the pub.

Just kidding, I know Poyll Dooey isn't near the pub.

  10. Babooshka, you come every day to Arradon and always take the time to let such a nice comment...And when I come here, I always see so many visitors, I often think all these English speakings certainly have something more interesting to say than me!
But I do enjoy your shots. I confess I don't always read all the text because it's often difficult for me, but I often try!
A few days ago, I saw two robins fighting in my garden, everyone thinks it's a lovely little bird but they can fight up to the death for their territory...

There's quite a few bargain laptops and PCs around now. Perhaps you ought to treat yourself to a new one for Christmas.

  14. My unqualified guess is during the day + sun! ... but beacause of the darkness under the tree, the flash has been working. ??

  15. There's light high on the tree trunk. Hmm... I think I'm going for a low evening sun through the trees - unless it's a street light of course!

    Nice puzzle.

  19. Since you have fired a flash (shadow visible), it was taken in the afternoon at 15.01 to be precise.

(Sorry, but I read the EXIF-data :-) ). However - the shadow I saw for myself.

PS Thank you for the comments!

  33. Must be the sun peeking from the branches on an afternoon.

I thought I posted a comment yesterday, now its odd I dont see it :D

  34. I was going with late afternoon for a couple of reasons. First, that's too bright to be a moon and too high up to be a streetlamp, plus the sky would have been darker in either of those cases. Now a long exposure would have lightened the sky, but the fill flash in combination with a long exposure would have probably washed out all the detail in the trunk -- or at least the shadows cast by the flash. So. Typical flash exposure, strong backlighting, light sky I was going with late afternoon or early evening depending on the time of year.

Then I saw the comment about reading the EXIF data and realized I was off by an hour or two.

I always compress my images before upload to save space and bandwidth, so I never have to worry about giving away my secrets ;)

  35. Odd and a little creepy. Reminds me of those huge muscles of body builders where you can see each and every muscle and vein. Ugh.

Thanks for visiting my Odd Shot!

  36. Think it's early morning, due to the intensity of the light. I like the photo and your thought-provoking challenge to us. I also like the White Bridge photo and your text that goes with it. But my favorite is the precious robin redbreast!
