RAMSEY HARBOUR


ABC WEDNESDAY - H IS FOR RAMSEY HARBOUR.

Last minute post. This is Ramsey Harbour, the working end as I call it. Not often you see it like this empty. Always boats moored obscuring the the view of the quayside. The solitary boat, serendipity and the buoy just bobbed into shot. A very dreary day so it went straight to monochrome. One thing about a grey day is you already have plenty of greyscale tones so they convert to B&W painlessly. Don't overdo the contrast. You end up with no shadow details and a harsh flat white. The colours tones should blend not fight each other.

What I like about this area and why I've tried to capture it boat free is it refers back to what I was saying the other day about dating a place by it's skyline not ground level. From the modern (well not that modern) flats to the mix of houses, pub and business premises in front you can see a timeline developing.

I've covered this in two posts before but Radio Caroline, Pirate radio station, was moored here and The Euterpe, or Star of India, tall ship was actually built here. A blog search will lead you to those posts.

It' a bit mad here at the moment. Gary has to do five drawing this week, instead of one. Can't go into details, but if you're in the UK, Sunday BBC1 Politics show. Watch or record. All I can say for now and no Gary will not be on it's the pics, but I can't say anymore.

Sad news today. Another British Pier has burnt down. What's really sad about this one is it's Fleetwood Pier, Gary's old hometown and where friends and relatives still live. Who said insurance job. The thought has occurred. Seems to be happening to a lot of properties in the UK
at the moment.

    I see what you mean about the architectural timeline. I'm going to have photographer's vision before too long, thanks to you. I like the b&w here.
    I'll bet Gary has some wicked good caricatures to show; too bad I can't get BBC1 in KnoxVegas.

    There is Euterpe is in San Diego. Is it the same one? The BBC has a channel here.I see the news on it, real news. Does that tide get any higher? I like lone boat really draws the eye.

    Yes, I see the timeline developing. Yes, I see the ready-and-waiting greyscale tones. Your blog is like going to photography school, a really good photography school with illustrations that make the text relevant. It just sings.     I too am concerned about the loss of piers, two fire so close together smells fishy to me.
    And it was arsonists that finished off the West Pier in Brighton, so skuttling plans to restore it.

    First thing that struck me with this photo was the big block of high-rise flats - they look typically local-authority built ones.

    Saw a brief film of the fire on the TV in the waiting room of the hospital yesterday - We may be visiting Fleetwood next month - so sad.

    Great photo. I'm sad to hear about the pier burning down too. I certainly hope that little 'accident' doens't happen at Mumbles!

    A good shot! And proof that some city planners and architects should be thrown in jail. The building in the back destroys the cityscape entirely.

    This is a beautiful picture. I love the black and white. I'm sorry to hear about your husband's hometown. I had no idea that a lot of pier's were burning in the UK.

    Hi Babooshka - I'm late! It looks eerily empty that harbour.

    Sad day for Fleetwood - my hubby's home town too. To be honest, I saw the pier acouple of weeks ago and it was a mess - vandalised and boarded up. I thought of you at the time and how you photograph the good and the bad - I took some photos, not knowing it would be the last time I saw the pier. *sigh* It is burnt to a crisp. Nothing left.

    And not an insurance job apparently. He wasn't insured. :0/
