For once no bird or cutie. This is a hoverfly. Often confused with a wasp, but on close examination you can see it clearly not.
Unlike bees and butterflies which have been scarce, I have seen an abundance of these hoverflies
around the nature reserve this year. Has anyone else noticed this too?
Got to run, it's late here and tomorrow is going to be a busy day. Not me, my partner. UK readers, watch or record the Politics Show BBC1. Gary's cartoon srtip will be on, voiced by John Culshaw. You heard that hear first. The first installment of the cartoon strip can be seen at this link BARKER GALLERY BBC POLITICS SHOW

ReplyDeleteI like the beautiful details and light of this photo, Babooshka. Very eye-catching.
ReplyDeleteThey sure do look like a bee. Nice pick for Camera Critters.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was bee. How did you get so close and stay in focus?
ReplyDeletethe color of the flower also offsets the bright bee oops the hoverfly..
ReplyDeletea very interesting and educative post again. thank you.
I love this photo of the hoverfly and flower - just gorgeous! I haven't seen too many here lately, but in the spring especially they were everywhere.
ReplyDeleteLOVEly macro shot!
ReplyDeleteGood informative writeup.
Very pretty picture. I thought it was a bee until I read below.

ReplyDeleteInteresting insect and gorgeous flower! Lovely photo!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I posted one of these a while ago but never knew so much about them. Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteWow, that purple is so shocking. Thanks for the info on the hoverfly, they do look like bees for sure.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw this photo I thought it was a bee and ... I even wasn't aware of the existence of such flies until I read your informative article! Thank you for this post! I'm still surprised!
ReplyDeletei never knew there was a difference between wasps and hoverflies - never heard of them till now... will look harder!

ReplyDeleteit looked like a bee to me when I first saw it, and it still does look like a bee to me. Thanks for the info anyway.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I've ever seen a hoverfly in Los Angeles. Maybe I just confused them with wasps.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous closeup, Babooshka.
We called that a Sun Fly. Haven't seen one for ages. I am not inferring that the sun has been absent for the same period however much a morning like this may suggest it.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant close up.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful capture - and so is the Sulby River shot!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
Cheers, Klaus

ReplyDeleteMy friends always get so mixed up wth wasps and hover-flies, which is annoying because they end up screaming at something completely harmless!
ReplyDeleteCiao
Scarlet xx
Love the photo. Great colours.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter still panics when a hoverfly comes around! All she sees is the black and yellow stripes and she's screaming 'WASPPPPPPPP!' before you know it.
OH! very pretty! Nice, love this and good info too!
ReplyDeleteIf it was doing some vacuum cleaning, would it be a Hooverfly?
ReplyDeleteGood photo.
Saw the Politics Show today & thought the cartoon of the PM standing in the in his bathing suit and holding a bucket & spade was hilarious. A real work of art!
I'll have to have a look at the link & see what other goodies are on show.
That is a stand out photo. Great contrast. Interesting info too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting while I've been busy. I'm back to normal now, thankfully!
Gary has got loads to go at! Interesting times ahead!
Nice photography. Interesting post to read. We also have hover flies similar to this one.
ReplyDeleteWe had the tail end of Hurricane Ike here all day. I lost my cherry tree and a lot of limbs. The neighbors lost three trees and they fell on a power line and that weight broke the power pole. Not a good day here in SW Ohio.
Mine are on Canon Pixels
Gorgeous photo! I love the color :-D (Purple is my favorite). I like how you put in the educational information too!
ReplyDeleteGreat post.

I have told my family for years these aren't wasps but they still freak out every time they see one so I've given up.
ReplyDeleteHow did you get it to sit right in the middle of that flower?
ReplyDeleteSo that's what they're called. *L* I couldn't remember, so I just referred to them as imitation bees.
ReplyDeleteIncredible clarity and colour in this photo. Love it.
A.
Hurray for aphid killers! Double ditto on boubou's statement (I better save 'cause Whiskers is ready to step on the BACKSPACE AGAIN!)
