HOVERFLY - CRITTERS SUNDAY


For once no bird or cutie. This is a hoverfly. Often confused with a wasp, but on close examination you can see it clearly not.


Unlike bees and butterflies which have been scarce, I have seen an abundance of these hoverflies
around the nature reserve this year. Has anyone else noticed this too?

    the color of the flower also offsets the bright bee oops the hoverfly..

    I love this photo of the hoverfly and flower - just gorgeous! I haven't seen too many here lately, but in the spring especially they were everywhere.

    I don't know if I've ever seen a hoverfly in Los Angeles. Maybe I just confused them with wasps.

    We called that a Sun Fly. Haven't seen one for ages. I am not inferring that the sun has been absent for the same period however much a morning like this may suggest it.

    My friends always get so mixed up wth wasps and hover-flies, which is annoying because they end up screaming at something completely harmless!

    Love the photo. Great colours.
    My daughter still panics when a hoverfly comes around! All she sees is the black and yellow stripes and she's screaming 'WASPPPPPPPP!' before you know it.

    Good photo.

    Saw the Politics Show today & thought the cartoon of the PM standing in the in his bathing suit and holding a bucket & spade was hilarious. A real work of art!

    I'll have to have a look at the link & see what other goodies are on show.

    Nice photography. Interesting post to read. We also have hover flies similar to this one.

    We had the tail end of Hurricane Ike here all day. I lost my cherry tree and a lot of limbs. The neighbors lost three trees and they fell on a power line and that weight broke the power pole. Not a good day here in SW Ohio.

    So that's what they're called. *L* I couldn't remember, so I just referred to them as imitation bees.
