ABC WEDNESDAY - B IS FOR BLACKBIRD

My other ABC is The Bay of Angels, Nice, France, which you can find on the new ABC WEDNESDAY

The blackbird above may look like it's singing, bit it's not. One simple reason for this, it's a young female, and female blackbirds don't sing. What she was actually doing was fluffing out her wings and for want of a better word sunbathing. Yes we do occasionally have sunny days here.

Another Manx Cat Myth

This little ditty it seems is authorless. Not exactly a haiku, but certainly sums up another fishy story of how the Manx cat became tailess.

Noah, sailing o’er the seas,
Ran high and dry on Ararat,
His dog then made a spring,
And took the tail from off a pussy cat,
Puss through the window quick did fly,
And bravely through the waters swam,
Nor ever stopped, till, high and dry,
She landed on the Isle of Man.
Thus tailless puss earned Mona’s thanks.
And ever after was called Manx.”

More myths and legends to follow. Not ust the cat variety either!

  3. I've never seen a blackbird. This is so neat. Is that a fruit tree, where she's perched?

  5. "Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

    Blackbird fly Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

  8. What kind of bird is that? It's really black and beautiful, we don't have this kind of bird here in Indonesia. Or yes? Never seen myself.

Thanks for passing by my blog.

  21. Thanks for popping in on mine...you're such a faithful favorite! Looks like we both ended up with BIRDS again!! LOL. Love this shot. We mostly take blackbirds for granted around here..it's great to see such a funny/friendly shot of one.

  24. he's all ruffled up too, nice photo. I don't see black birds around here, just crows.

  25. It's a bonny bird in the bush. No double entendre intended.
We don't have blackbirds in my town. We have grackles, which are sort of black. They're obnoxiously loud and they poop a lot.

  26. Indeed that is a black bird, but at least it's not frightening like the crow.

Thanks for visiting Norwich Daily Photo.

  27. Love your little birdie. Have been seeing a lot of birds, black or otherwise (!) with their beaks open and wings spread to cool off, or so I think. I guess birds can pant, too!

  28. I like blackbirds I was only reading the other day about them sunbathing!

  29. I often wonder, why in the world of birds, the males are usually more beautiful (they sing, dance, etc.) - for the picky lady birds? :)

  30. What a great shot of the blackbird - looks even better when enlarged. Thx for popping in to see my B post! Have a great week. :D

  33. How interesting...I never knew the female blackbird does not sing!

As a kid, we used to see red-winged blackbirds in the marshy lagoons near my home on the Pacific coast. Of course, there are lots of regular black birds here in Southern California too.
