"Read sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in morning shepherds's warning."
Gary has just told me that he remembers it but he said "sailor" instead of "shepherd." He's from Fleetwood, a costal town in the North Of England and I'm from Birmingham, the second city in the UK. It explains why Gary would substitute the word sailor, but not why I would use the word shepherd, although many moons ago before the industrial revolution Birmingham was quite rural. Either way it's a prediction using the sky's palette of the upcoming weather.
So, do you recall this saying, or have you got a different one ?

I always heard sailor instead of shepherd. I guess it depends on where you live. We don't live anywhere close to an ocean.
ReplyDeleteI do like you red sky tonight though. It makes a perfect SWF photo.
I pink lipstick sky! Gosh it's lovely!
ReplyDeleteI always heard sailor from my Dad and Grandpa.
"Louis" also knows it as 'sailor' rather than 'shepherd''; odd given that he first heard it in the flat, hot, dusty, dry Texas Panhandle where he grew up, hundreds of miles from any ocean!
ReplyDelete"Louis", an early riser, caught San Francisco waking up.
Beautiful colors.
ReplyDeleteAmazing color! I always heard it sailor, but then we don't have any shepherds in these parts. Guess you can make it whatever works for where you are.
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic. I do remember this little jingle from days gone by and still believe in it today!
ReplyDeleteMountain Retreat
I've always heard "sailor" and have never heard "shepherd" so I find that fascinating! My paternal grandfather was a boat builder...I'm sure that's why we grew up hearing: "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky at morning, sailor take warning." Beautiful sunset, either way!
ReplyDeleteI've always said shepherd and seeing I'm a Brummie born and bred we may have had the same teacher. Cracking pic again. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! I learned the saying with 'sailor' instead of shepherd.
ReplyDeleteSaliors delightful babycakes. In Fife, it's sailors. Surreal, reminds me of Dundee.
ReplyDeleteCiao!
Jacqui
Like the others, I always heard it as sailor....but your photo is beautiful regardless of shepherd or sailor!
ReplyDeleteI always heard sailor...either way, that is a great photograph to go with the saying.
ReplyDeleteBabooshka: I always heard and used it as a sailor or boater. A very colorful Red Sky.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen anything like it! Very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSpectacular pic today! Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteWhat color! I was so taken by the sky I didn't notice the silhouetted buildings below. I love when that happens!
ReplyDeleteWe always went with sailor's delight. Dad loved to boat. As kids who wanted a break from the water, we'd hope for any color but red a lot of the time!
Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteStunning color in that photo! I've always heard "sailor," but I also learned at an early age:
ReplyDelete"Evening gray and morning red,
Keep the traveler in his bed.
Evening red and morning gray,
Send the traveler on his way."
That's a cherry red sky! What kind of day followed it?
ReplyDeleteI've heard the expression with the word "sailor" but I grew up on the ocean.
I know it as shepherd. Stunning colour.
ReplyDeleteStunning, Babooshka!
ReplyDeleteIncredible color! I've never seen a sky like this one. Congratulations on a fabulous sky capture.
ReplyDeleteOh mY gosh this is one of the most beautiful colors i have seen so far in SKY WATCH
ReplyDeleteAn amazing sky.
ReplyDeleteI'm with the shepherd brigage - never ever heard the sailor version till now.
I'm in the sailor camp as well. Lovely dusky rose sky!
ReplyDeleteperfect sunset...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful picture.
ReplyDeleteI know the saying as 'Shepherd' and I'm from St. Ives in Cornwall originally.
LOVELY! :)
ReplyDeleteDrat the warning - the colours (and the silhouette) were fine!
ReplyDeleteShepherd here, we are a rural area so I guess this is the case. We didn't get to see Ramsey Harbour this time....something to see next year I guess.
ReplyDeleteWonderful sunset.
Beautiful photo!
ReplyDeleteIn Norway we say; evening red morning sweet, morning red evening wet.
!!!! fire in the sky !!!!!
ReplyDeleteamazing
woo! cool catch for Sky Watch Friday! earth and sky are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books. Mine’s up too hope you can drop by but if you already visited then thanks.
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing about both shepards and sailors in Australia :) Red sky sure is a DELIGHT for Skywatch Friday!!!
ReplyDeleteSailors beware! I can see you have hit the Manx brick wall. It is sad but come overs can be treated this way. This ex Manx lass has emailed the courier about your blog and work. I hope it helps. I use the blog to keep in touch with my motherland. I have bought some of your photos too and they proudly sit in my office space at work. Keep going. It's a super blog and your photographs are the best of the Isle of Man period.
ReplyDeletesuperbe, cette lumiere fait penser aux enfers. bravo
ReplyDeletebeautiful, this light is reminiscent of hell. Bravo
Very pretty dusky pink sky.
ReplyDeleteWOW !
ReplyDeleteDramatic.
I have known the saying all my life but initially as bucolic rather than maritime.
Bong!
ReplyDeleteOnly meee!
I also say Shepherd... have a look at the links and check out Salty's post... he mentions this as well.
Hope your getting over the TT Blues..
Thank you for joining in with Sky Watch this week and helping to make it special.
Tom :O)
Absolutely fabulous !
ReplyDeleteTwo words, Baboosh. First is...Smashing! Your photo is incredible! I have only seen a few blogs so far, but how can you top that sunset, those colors?
ReplyDeleteThe other word is sailor. Has to be from someone who calls a place to cook a galley and a floor a deck. I have heard shepherd used now and then.
Now that is one RED sky, its fantastic.
ReplyDeleteYup, I remember the saying with the shepherds delight too, I think both shepherds and sailors would be delighted with your sky.
I did a few posts on Birmingham quite a while ago, bringing its Arty side out.
Hi - here from Mannanan's Cloak. Great photo and website, I shall visit daily!
ReplyDeleteI always said the rhyme with shepherd, never heard it with sailor.
Lovely warm colours. What a wonderful photo. Happy SWF.
ReplyDeleteLovely warm colours. What a wonderful photo. Happy SWF.
ReplyDeletebeautiful colours!
ReplyDeleteI love the deep raspberry color of the sky. Very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteVery lovely photo for SWF. The colour of the sky looked so beautiful.
ReplyDeletei've always heard sailor, not shepherd, like abe. brilliant capture
ReplyDeleteI too learned it with sailor!
ReplyDeleteThis is the most amazing sky! The colors are intense!
I had always heard it with sailor but one could put anything in there. It just means the weather is going to change, for the good or bad. Thanks for visiting my blog. MB
ReplyDeleteI always heard "sailor". In any case, that blood red sunset is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI always say sailor as well! Any way you look at it, it's a spectacular sky!
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S a sky! I could sit and look at this all day ...
ReplyDeletereally
:-Daryl
I have always heard that saying with the word "sailor" in place of shepherd. But both would work I think.
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous picture, it almost looks as if there is a fire off somewhere in the distance.
Another amazing shot!
ReplyDeleteSpectacular sky colors, too!
Great capture.
Somebody threw blood in the sky! =D Great colours! I never get to see that much here lol.
ReplyDeleteWonderful, amazing, great sky watch.
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteRed Sky at Night .... Sailors Delight
Red Sky in the Morning....Sailors take warning.
We used both versions - a sheep farming, coastal area! Mostly we used "Sailors".
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful sky!
Gosh babooshka! Even if I haven't heard of that saying, your photo left my mouth opened! it is a very stunning photo! I really like it! i haven't seen the sky so pink yet! Love it!

ReplyDeletepetunia's SWF
Very pretty. I like your blog it has many pretty photographs.
ReplyDeleteI've heard the sailor version too. This picture is fabulous!
ReplyDeletea beautiful fire in the sky
ReplyDeletestunning photo! I remember it as shepherds too - I still say it every time I see a red sky in the morning or evening, to remind myself of the likely weather!
ReplyDeleteHi! This is a stunning photo. We always use sailor. 'Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor's heed warning'
ReplyDeleteI know it as shepherds, I've never heard it said of sailors.
ReplyDeleteI love this photo, the sky is stunning.
Someone told me, and I'm not sure how true it is, that colours like this are enhanced by pollution. You said this sky is over an industrial site and where I work, by the side of the M5 motorway, we often have skies as gorgeous as this one. Of course that theory could be a load of old balls!
Enjoy your weekend :)
I also know it as sailor, not shepherd. Guess it depends if you live on the water or inland.
ReplyDeleteWait! I grew up in Missouri - far far away from the sea or ocean and still knew it with sailor.
Your photo is beautiful. A perfect SWF.
Really gorgeous colours. Candy floss pink.
ReplyDeleteStunning red sky :)
ReplyDeleteRed sky on blog, visitors delighted.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the sailor camp, but then my dad was in the Navy.
My long gone grandparents thought that evening sky like that meant war soon. The war never came, so their prediction wasn´t very accurate.
ReplyDeleteI always heard shepherd, never sailor...until I married my hubby whose Dad was a Captain in the Navy.
ReplyDeleteA Fabulous Skywatch shot!!!!
Beautiful red sky.
ReplyDeleteA stunning image for sure with wonderful colors. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking at your photo on a pair of color calibrated monitors and the color of that red sky is captivating. I don't think I've ever seen one quite like it, but I sure would like to photograph one.
ReplyDeleteVery nice sunset image! Yes, I remember "sailor" as well. Indeed, I often repeat that saying every sunrise/sunset I see.
Wow! Fantastic color and a wonderful shot!:)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeletethanks for the visit, late post, late visit, it's all good! The colour on this is just amazing, ours are usually pastel pink or bright orange.
ReplyDeleteAn out of the world sky. Dr who would not be out of place here.
ReplyDeleteMatthew 16
ReplyDeleteThe Demand for a Sign
"When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.
Beautiful colors in that sky.
simply wonderful!
