Obviously this isn't a skyscraper, but it is Ramsey's tallest building. The low angle lends to the deception of height beyond it's inches. It's tall, but no skycraper. These are private flats situated behind Queens Promenade and overlooking St Paul's Square. This is the modern side of Ramsey, the ugly austere side. They're '60's and '70's concrete "homes in the sky" that look down upon the equally austere St Paul's Shopping Precint. It's not a mall, it's definately what's known as a precint, shops designed in a walkaround rectangle. Not my kind of place at all, but the view from the top looking onto the Promenade is spectacular.Although this tiny part of town is drab and grey, it's still free of graffiti, litter, chewing gum adorned pavements and free from vandalism. You can walk around of an evening down to the beach, the local pubs or the Harbour Lights Bistro ( right next door) and dawdle back in the early hours of the following day in the knowledge that this is still a safe area. The equivalent area in the UK couldn't afford you the same luxury, it would be considered a no go area and best avoided. So, it may not be the prettiest photo of Ramsey I've posted, but if you want a room with a view, a safe haven, close to all your town amenities then it's the ideal spot. Not so bad afterall then.
So, question today is, are there no go area in your daily photo place?
Since living in England I have found many areas I will never go to again.I am biased because I am a Manxie,and there are some really nice parts here,but not like the island.

ReplyDeletethere are neighborhoods as Evry (if I understand your text), or it does not take better pictures of the day, or he going to run fast ;o) I think it exists in all cities .
Nice that its a clean and safe area if not the best looking. There are places in Terrell I wont go into after dark, heck, I even get leary during the day.
ReplyDeleteHi! There are buildings like this here, too, though not necessarily in a no-go area. As for skyscrapers, when I came here in 1977 my husband proudly showed me the "skyscraper" where he worked, which was 10 stories high.... They have low skies here!

ReplyDeleteNo terribly tall buildings here...very few, in fact, nearby either! I love Geneva by day AND by night! The streets are so peaceful after dark.

ReplyDeleteWe have many area that is not recommended for people to go there when it is dark. That is way a lot of Clevelander prefer stay in suburb. But some parts of downtown in my opinion is fun to live and stay.
ReplyDeleteI feel safe here in Monroe, but there are other areas that I would avoid. Unfortunately there are quite a few bad neighborhoods around Atlanta.

The angle of this shot really does make the building seem very tall indeed. There are certainly some areas of Knoxville that are no-go at night, and go-with-caution during the day. Surprisingly, downtown isn't one of them.
ReplyDeleteI think the tallest building here is four floors high and safety isn't really an issue. However, when I venture down to Toronto there are areas you definitely don't go into at night.

ReplyDeleteCheltenham has many areas that are a bit rough (to say the least). One day, when I'm feeling brave, I'll get some photos of these places. If my camera doesn't get nicked!

ReplyDeleteWe are quite lucky in that our city is well policed and very safe. And this is one of the best points about it. Oh I'm sure there are places I'd not walk at 2AM. And times of the year, when there are lots more people in town, so things can change some. But basically, it's a safe, little {to us} city.

ReplyDelete"Louis" et Mme. la Vache live in Albany, a small suburban town in the East Bay across from San Francisco. We are blessed with having no "no go" areas in Albany, but on the north side of Albany is Richmond and Berkeley (or as "Louis" prefers to call it, "the People's Republic of Berserkeley") to the south. "Berserkeley" has plenty of "no-go" areas, and almost all of Richmond is "no-go", sad to say.
ReplyDeletewhere we live the question is more like "are there any areas where you CAN go and feel safe" .... ok that's stretching it a bit, but sadly crime is way beyond a joke in SA right now. I think it was inspired of you to take this in B&W, as it enhances the austere atmosphere you describe. I will take up the challenge on Port Elizabeth Daily Photo soon, we always tend to show the attractive images, and maybe we need to balance it with a few shots of the uglier parts of town!
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of no-go areas in Birmingham which is a shame because there are some lovely old buildings which are in very rough areas; Aston and Handsworth being two such areas.
