CRITTERS SUNDAY - RED ADMIRAL

Lots of butterflies around this week that are actually settling long enough to photograph. Think it's the warmer weather. Even the critters want to take time out and rest. Good for the photographer.

This is quite a common butterfly, a red admiral. Are you all familiar with this butterfly? I say it's common, but that's in my part of the world. Be interesting to see if he's a widespread as I think. He was so vivid that I chose to desaturate the distracting background emphasing his orange/red bands more.

A short text today. A very busy two weeks for me as the tourists for the TT, the motorbike races have hit town and I 'd like to capture a few for the blog as the locals just run away when my camera appears. At least the critters don't as you'll see on "monday's odd shot." They see to flock round me to have there image taken.

For more camera critters see MISTY DAWN Camera ctrittrers.

  2. I like the way you've presented this butterly. Glad there still are buttrflies, the absence of which they say is a sign of an ecological imbalance. More, more!

  4. I love butterflies! They represent freedom and beauty to me. Love your photo!

Thanks for visiting Norwich Daily Photo and leaving your comments. It's been a while but I hope to visit your blog more regularly. A lot of things have happened in my so called life, which prevented me from being more active online. Enjoy the week ahead!

  5. New to me. Colors are lovely, but the antennae look almost unreal!
It's fun to say butterfly in Hebrew: parPAR .

  6. That is indeed a lovely picture Babooshka, with the small amount of red in the foreground, and mostly background.

  9. That's beautiful! I've always liked butterflies. As a kid I would go out and catch them, put them in a jar, and then turn them loose after a little while.

  13. That is a really wonderful shot .. I like the lack of background effect .. makes him/her all the more lovely to look at .. I have never seen a Red Admiral here in the NY/NJ/CT area but then I havent been looking all that hard .. now I will have to pay more attention!

  14. Very fine photo, Babooshka! "Louis" has always enjoyed butterflies - and it is indeed difficult to capture them because they rarely stay in place long enough to set up for the shot.

  15. What a gorgeous butterfly photo!!! I don’t think I’ve seen this variety here in Southern California. Today I could use some ‘gopher’ advice if you (or others) have any … but the main event in my Camera Critters this week (at Small Reflections) is Molly meeting a ‘look-alike’ last weekend … named Molly!
    Hugs and blessings,

  17. Babooshka - re your comment at San Francisco Bay Daily Photo about Memorial Day. Technically the holiday is on 30 May to commemorate those who have died in battle, particularly those who died in World Wars I and II. A few years back, the date of the holiday was changed to allow it to become a '3 day weekend' with Monday being the third day. An unfortunate side effect of this change is now that instead of remembering those who have fallen in battle, the Memorial Day weekend has become the unofficial start of the summer bar-b-q season and an excuse to drink beer in excess, all of which is greedily catered to by various retail establishments who can profit by this. 11 November, which is still widely observed in Europe (and I assume in the U.K.) as the end of WWI is Veterans Day in the U.S., WWI being largely forgotten, perhaps because the U.S., unlike the U.K. and Continental Europe, didn't lose an entire generation in that conflict because of its very late entry into that war. "Louis" will have a post about Memorial Day up at 0101 your time Monday.

  23. Gorgeous admiral photo. The colors on this species contrast so well, that its hard to miss them. I saw a few of them in Texas last year. Around here, they generally show up in the last summer. Fun bug to find.

Why oh why do you want people in your blog? Critters are so much more interesting and accommodating!

  26. I don't think this butterfly is common in Texas. It doesn't look familiar to me at all. It's beautiful though.

  30. I'm pretty sure I've seen these in Australia but definitely not in Athens. Actually, aside from cockroaches and flies I dont think many other insects survive Athens. That's why at my house, we have a strict no killing of insects policy. Poor things have a hard enough time as it is :) And after that ramble, gorgeous photo :)
